So Sheffield City Centre is HISTORY??

Obviously Meadowhell has taken it's toll on the city center but i still find everything i want in town. I'm not lazy. I don't mind walking around our city center, taking in the great architecture on my way. It's miles better than looking at sterile marbled walls and floors.

I would suggest you don't really know the city center. Castle market is downtrodden but that doesn't mean the people inside are any worse than those operating from their nice sterile environments in Meadowhell. The Moor is going through a long winded regeneration. Fargate is just trying to be a small slice of what Meadowhell is.

In my opinion, the city center still has almost everything Meadowhall has. The things it doesn't have, i don't want anyway.

agreed sir:) love this city!

It seems strange to me that folk complain about having to walk in Sheffield city centre, but happily walk round Meadowhall.

I tend to alternate, 'doing' the Fargate area one day, and down the Moor the next.

There is also Freebee if you want to go to both ends of town.

There is a definite lack of interesting independent shops in town. I would particularly like to see a decent toy shop. Also some shops which cater for the older woman who is not stick thin and six feet tall.

Personally I hate Meadowhell, and only go there perhaps once or twice a year.

Ebay & online shopping, it's not just Sheffield it's every town. City centre shopping will be history in 10 years time

This is true.

Sheffield city centre is no worse than its ever been (there have been a lot of improvements, like the free minibus taking shoppers from the Moor to the Markets).

However, whilst out shops are no smaller than they used to be, the trend is for bigger and bigger ones elsewhere. A decade ago the M&S on Fargate seemed big - now it feels quite cramped compared to the size of the unit at Meadowhall.

Same goes for other places too (how small is Next?).

Hopefully Sevenstone will give us a few bigger units capable of letting the "major" shops spread out a bit, which will leave some gaps to be filled by other places.

However, there's a bit of a losing battle here, as many things move online (e.g. we had FOPP/ Virgin/ Music Zone/ Woolies and *two* HMVs a few years ago, now we only have one HMV - but then how little "physical" music do people buy nowadays? And most of that is bought on website (Amazon etc).

Same goes for books (people buy online or have Kindles), its going like that for a number of products really.

There are loads of posts about how poor Sheffield has become, but WHO is to blame?? Meadowhall is No 1 suspect, but why is the city so dire for shopping? Are the council charging too high rents and rates where the customer footfall is so poor? Or is it the cost of parking??

Any suggestions?

Small shops that cater to immigrants are booming. So much so, that I have Eastern Europeans that I have helped acquire the appropriate licenses for selling alcohol and other products, now asking me about the viability of setting up shops to cater specifically to the English. Intending to put the local (and outdated) '****-shop' out of business. They plan to sell English goods to English people and hire only English staff. It's a very interesting change in the direction of business, and I believe they shall do well in their venture!

They don't seek to open shops in Sheffield, but elsewhere in the small towns of South Yorkshire. Where in Sheffield, is a Sheffield born and bred man supposed to live (untill the boomers start dying off in droves and property is in abundance)?. We can't put off having a life forever!

There is a lot of Meadowhall slagging on this thread, in my opinion, it is the best thing that ever happened to Sheffield.

If it was up to some people we would still be wandering round the same old shops, selling the same old tat in Sheffield City centre. I now go to Sheffield twice a year, once will be on sunday for 'fright night' the next time will be to see the sheffield Christmas lights switched on (and that's only to make the kids happy)

Town centre shopping is DEAD, long live the shopping Mall.

Why is The Moor dead? Take a look at the list of shops and you'll see why.

It's merely a list of shops selling tat, fast food, and things you can buy cheaper on the internet.

We must be grateful we still have TJs.

The poor are still clothed!

Meadowhall is great, it keeps the riff-raff out of the city centre, in the way that Players Bar is the best think to happen on West Street as it leaves the other pubs for decent people
