cutiecavies Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 Have been visiting Derwent Valley a lot just lately and have been reading about the history of the flooded villages and of Tin Town. I find it all very interesting. I wish I could find out some more about it, see more pics watch footage etc but I can't seem to find much. I also saw some bricks made by Skyers Spring Barnsley in the woods where Birchenlee once stood. Does anyone know anymore about these or could someone help me find out more.
MrsMozzy Posted October 29, 2011 Posted October 29, 2011 I have a small paperback book(let) somewhere called The Silent Valley (very interesting) but I can't remember where I got it from, sorry. It's the sort of thing you'd find in craft shops etc though, so perhaps that one in Calver might sell one, or the Tourist Info place in Bakewell?
Plain Talker Posted October 29, 2011 Posted October 29, 2011 There's a lot of interest in the Derwent valley, and the dams. There are a lot of threads on here about Howden/ Derwent/ Ladybower dams. I'm sure you'll find some lovely photos within those threads. This one, by the sadly missed Albert T Smith:- http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=373186 http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=83080 http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=751453 http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=720376

scousemouse Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 I have this book and often read it. I had an aunt who lived there as a child, and I wish now I had asked her more about it. Very interesting.
mammybear Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 have you tried the tourist information centre at derwent they sell a large selection of books about the local area, including one specifically about tin town.
Lockjaw Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 I bought mine from the church in Hathersage. Many years ago, though.
