It stops being a rumor when you see it though, as i did back in the early 2000's. It looked about 4Lb then.

i was told they were big back then 20+lb allegedly lol but at least someone has seen em,i was told about them around 1990-1991

Interesting that you said 'they'. I didn't know there was supposed to be more than one. Maybe they are breeding?

Just because someone says " I've seen it " is not proof. I still don't believe it.

That is your prerogative.

Was this half a dozen Catfish?

Who stocked these fish? not the Sheffield council I'll wager.

If this is Cats & they've been in for 20yrs I wonder what they survive on. Surely 6 fish of this species would have run out of prey fish in such a confined space as deep as it is.

Where did the info come from Acer, was it in the Sheffield star as a search through their archives wouldn't be too taxing.

By the way I'm not calling anyone a liar. It's just that it would be good to have some concrete evidence for a change instead of folk law or hear say.

But until some comes to light I'm not the type to swallow rumours.

I read it a while back whilst trawling for info about the place....

this was posted from an Anglers Mail edition apparently...

This description is in this weeks Anglers Mail....

Description

under the control of the local council this three acre has depths to a reported 43ft in the middle, shelving upto as little as 3ft in the margins. The venue is very popular and contains carp to 30lb,chub to 6lb 2oz,perch and bream to 3lb and roach that nudge 2lb. also odd catfish, zander and pike.

Tactics

The bigger carp here fall to boilies, large pellets or a generous chunk of meat fished to the edge of the deeper water. Other carp tactics include surface fishing crust or dog biscuit early doors or evenings. Conventional feeder fishing scores with maggot or caster for bream. Quality roach and skimmers to float fished maggot or caster or avery small feeder with the same baits on a long hook length.

Good Swims

Try fishing the swims facing a warm wind.

Tickets

Free fishing. Fishing dawn till dusk. Tel: 0114 2812178. North East byelaws. Open all year

Also this from yorksfishing.proboards.com....

Theres reputedly one or two huge catfish in there too which have been seen by police divers who use the lake periodically apparently. I believe the University put them in there some years ago. I had a bash for them a couple of years ago, fishing into darkness, but bottled out when the local druggies appeared.

the thread for that is here.... http://yorksfishing.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=outh&action=print&thread=153

Still not concrete evidence but would love to think there are some catfish in there.

First things first in my post above I wrote ( folk law ) this of course should read folklore.

I've always took it as read that the only thing that is close to the truth in news papers is the date, probably.

As in regard to your post above I suspect people read these things & pass it on through forums, or even to mates in the pub.

As interesting as it is your quote at the bottom sums it up for me.

Unless photographic evidence is to come to light I have a propensity to take all such claims with a pinch of snuff
