chem1st Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 A very simple question. Should the people in the UK have the right to be paid their wages in cash. For you see, they currently do not have that right.
MrSmith Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 They should have the right to find an employer that will pay them cash, they should have the right to ask their employer to pay them cash, but they shouldn’t have the right to dictate terms of employment to their employer.

The odious practice is called 'truck, hence the Truck Acts (now repealed). http://uk.ask.com/web?q=%22Truck+Acts%22&sm=adv&advc=uk&dm=ctry&qsrc=66&o=312&l=dir

Doesn't take much thinking to work out which payment method is best. jb
donuticus Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Yay. Back to the good old days of wages van holdups on a Thursday lunchtime.
Jeffrey Shaw Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 I wonder what the position would be if you closed your bank account - they after all can't decide not to pay you, and they can't sack you for not having a bank account... It would all depend on your Contract of Employment's terms and conditions. Everyone's now state cheque or BACS as payment method.

If a condition of your employment is that you operate a bank account for your wages to be paid into then yes, they could fire you. Failing that maybe they would issue you a cheque. jb
lee79 Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 I've had 2 employers in the past who prefered to pay in cash. One was on a Friday one of the busier days so had the cash at the end of the day. The reason she gave is that she's not paying the banks fees or something along those lines.

I recall those days when the security van would turn up with the wages. The factory was locked down until it left and people were restricted from given areas for the day. It was a time when payroll trucks were being attacked and a couple of people lost their wages as they walked home pretty much every week. Why would anyone be stupid enough to want their wages in cash?
