melcebu Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 just finished a course on html basics, i can now build a basic site but have no idea how to get it online, tried searching for web hosting but they all seem to be in dollars also how do i register the site most of them ask for the name .com do i put the full file name in with the main page?
floyd77 Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 You need two things - hosting and a domain name There are litteraly thousands of options of where to get these from, even people on this forum will be able to offer you reasonable hosting and domain, and if you ask nicely even nudges in the right direction if you get stuck with anything. Don't want to make it look like all sales speil, but I can do all this as can a few other members on here. There are also other options like free web hosting sites - i'm not a fan of these as they tend to be template driven, or very restrivtive with what you can and can't do. If you're learning this may be an issue. Much better to get your own hosting - and it's tens of pounds per year rather than hundreds, so not a massive expense.

Depends on the host. http://www.000webhost.com/ offers free PHP/MySQL hosting with a small advert inserted into each page (footer).
ElasticMan Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 I've used these before - price in £'s and very cheap http://www.uk-cheapest.co.uk/domain-search.php You can get 'www.melcebu.co.uk' for £5.94 for two years

I'm not saying write off the free offering if they suit - just that they have restrictions, like making you have adverts as you point out. I was more trying to make the point that paid hosting doesnt have to be expensive, and I think that a small outlay gets you so much more. It's not like the jump is from free hosting to hundreds or thousands of pounds.

floyd77 Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 You could do it a few ways - depends what you're trying to do. If the name of the site doesnt really matter have one main site, with a few sub-domains for each? Then you only pay for one domain name and one chunk of hosting.
