melly89 Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 I'm a little confused about housing benefit. When I moved into a council property 3 years ago I saw a benefits adviser about what I could claim, they said nothing which I thought was fair enough. Someone I know then moved into a private rent property and got granted housing benefit, this paid near enough three quarters of the rent. I know for a fact they have a higher income than me. I went back to the advisor and got told once again I can't claim any benefits. I'm just a little confused as to why someone with a higher income gets the help? I've checked on the benefits calculator today and it says I should get the benefit but twice I've been and they've denied it?

diamondjack Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 The best thing to do would be to submit a claim form with the proof of all your income and capital and proof of ID. your entitlement (if any) will then be calculated and you will be advised of it - not all advisors work it out correctly!
jake Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 Why don't you make a claim? anyone is entitled to claim - though whether you get any money obviously depends on your income. or you could go & you see an independent benefit adviser (eg CAB or Advice Centre) who'll give you unbiased advice on your entitlement.
sazmill Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Put in the housing benefit claim, give all wage slips and information needed, if you have checked and the housing benefit calalator states you should get I don't see how you can't Good Luck and hope it gets sorted!
Barney906 Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 The person you know, could be paying a higher rent, if they are in private accommodation, the rents are much higher than in council homes. If they have kids, disabilities, different incomes, different age etc can all make a difference to whether they qualify or not. Youve got nothing to lose by putting in a claim, but assesors cannot tell you about the other persons details

It is more likely the private rent will be more than the Council rent. Also the ages may be different. Under 35's get a different LHA rate to older people.
MrGutsy Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 I can only reiterate others' suggestions about contacting the Citizen's Advice Bureau.
