Speed Demon Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 i know it was released in 1995, but what are the thoughts on this epic masterpiece mel gibson may have gone off the rails in recent years but he really did get it right with braveheart, his first time as director and the casting and production of this film really was superb, i know seeing as most modern films even the most basic ones have used fancy effects and CGI to enhance their films but for mel gibson he really did manage to pull it off and shows todays films how it should be done i think that the incredibly sad ending and the spin tingling music by james horner was nothing short of amazing, the acting was just about right considering that the film had a decent amount of humour in it, the feel and emotion of the film totally made up for any dodgy performances the actors may have done the story also was a bit sketchy and as with all historical films, the director has to take a few risks and make things up but it does not detract from how powerful this film really was, it deserved all the oscars it got and was also a modern classic, just a shame that passion of the christ was not in english as i would have enjoyed that film just as much, mind you, passion was nowhere near as fun as braveheart and took a much more serious tone instead mel gibson and james horner, i take my kilt off to you both, for making such an emotional epic film and giving me goosebumps with that amazingly sad and emotional music...
top4718 Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 Never liked this anti-English, historically incorrect, overlong tripe and can't understand what the fuss is about. Apocalypto was a better Gibson film.
Speed Demon Posted October 24, 2011 Author Posted October 24, 2011 that is just like saying that passion of the christ was anti bible bashing, lets face it us english have clearly done more of our fair share of evil doings over the centuries we ourselves have terrorised and bullied nations and people throughout the ages so it is a bit ignorant saying that some films are anti english or anti american
tinfoilhat Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 But it has completely changed the face paint design of Scottish football and rugby fans. Of that we can be sure.
azazel666 Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 It's a stunning film. Watched it on Blu Ray last week. Looks and sounds amazing and the story is also truly captivating. It might not be totally accurate historically but how do we know what is so long after the event? Definitely in my list of classics.

Completely agree with all of the above, brilliant movie, possibly my all-time favourite film. The music and emotion at times is overwhelming, loved it the first time I watched it and every other time after that - a true classic that will live on and on and on like Mr Wallace himself!!
johncocker Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 I haved just watched "Braveheart" on dvd and can honestly say that it is completely diabolical. The acting is absolutely atrocious-well they hired Mel Gibson so what did they expect? The price paid for entertainment, destroys the memory of the legendary Scot hero, Sir William Wallace. The film was a travesty of history - complete rubbish in which an Australian working for Americans turns a real Scottish hero into a myth. It was far too long and hardly featured a scene without Gibson, for the most part his portrayal was annoying, during the death scene the man hardy changed his facial expression. Wallace suffered a death that by the standard of the day was barbaric The film is also historically inaccurate. Here is the true story: The Scottish started massacring each other as soon as the Norse empires collapsed and eventually 13 people claimed to be the king! English King Edward (Longshank's) was ASKED by the Scottish nobility to arbitrate in the debate over who was to be the true King of Scotland (1291). He supported Baliol as Scottish king, but Baliol immediately formed an alliance with France, thereby threatening England's security. Edward's attitude made things worse and he ended up defeating Baliol in battle. (1296). Wallace's uprising had the support of the gentry, the commonality and France but got little aid at first from the nobles. (1297). Wallace won a victory at Stirling. Edward used his long bow men to open the way for a cavalry charge, defeated Wallace at Falkirk and drove him into exile. (1298). Wallace was handed over to the English by his own people and executed in 1305. Scotland was then incorporated under the English crown, Scottish law was retained and Scottish representatives sat in Parliament. Eventually Scottish nationalism found a leader under Robert the Bruce (grandson of one of the claimants to the throne), Edward died on an expedition against Bruce in 1307. As you can see, the film is complete and utter nonsense- I wasted 2 hours of my life watching this rubbish. It completely diminshes Wallace's memory, for the price of entertainment. I would advise you not to watch it...
