I have just watched project Jericho on BBC2. A program about a raid on a French prison by the RAF

It turns out that the group captain of this WW2 mission Charles Pickard was born in sheffield (Handsworth).

It's amazing how Sheffield has given the world so many giants from history.

I have checked the Sheffield Council website of legends and it only seems to be people from sport or TV.

It would be good to show people who have made a significant mark in the development of the city or country too.

The steel makers should be in the list too.

Someone please confirm that as a young kid who was an avid reader of both the Lion & Tiger comics, that this daring raid was used as one of their stories. It was illustrated in a fine style also and I believe the raid on the submarine base at St Nazaire by the SBS was alsoa feature story in one of these comics, Happy Days !

Just watched a repeat of this documentary. On a lesser scale, Charles Pickards father founded the Mecca entertainment empire, ballrooms, bingo halls etc
