Chinese toddler run over and ignored by passers by

I read yesterday that the problem in China is when someone helps they are often either accused of causing the injury in the first place and pursued for damages or are assumed to be a relative and are given the hospital bill.

..."The China Daily reported incidents in January in which elderly men who fell in the street were left alone because people did not want to get involved.

It cited an earlier case in which a man, Peng Yu, who helped an injured elderly lady to hospital was then found by a court to be liable for some of her medical costs.

Another case - in which an elderly woman believed to have fallen in the road accused a man, Xu Yunhe, who stopped to help her, of hitting her with his car - also attracted considerable attention"

It's sad. I note from 'big g's post that: "Guangdong province is debating the introduction of a law to force people to help others in obvious distress."

That's a start. It would put them on a par with (most of) the countries in Europe and ahead of the Brits.

I saw this video 3 days ago and it really disturbed me, thats why i didnt put it on here, for 2 people to run over the poor girl and the first one twice is truly unbelievable, the first guy was interviewed and asked if he had seen her, to which he said yes, sick sick so and so,s, and to hear that she has now died is no surprise after that, poor little thing :(

when i first heard about this little toddler i was quite upset and the story disturbed me some what, to hear now that she has died, iam very upset, that poor poor child and to think no one helped her makes my heart break it really does...

i never watched the video and i wont, visions like that stick and im upset enough to hear of this tragic news, tbh, i dont know how anyone else can watch it and the fact its still available to be viewed is disgusting!

I personally don't see anything wrong with the video being available to view. For some, words just dont portray what has actually happened well enough. As long as viewer discression is advised, then it's fine to be shown. Those that don't wish to see it do not have to look.

Yes, it was in China.

I read the story on Tuesday, I haven't watched the video.

I don't think it would happen in the UK, I can't imagine people just walking past leaving a child dying in the gutter! It simply beggars that mind that these people could be so inhuman and callous. Not one of them even bothered to phone the emergency services.

There are lots of examples of passers by ignoring injured and dying people in this country. Also seen reports of people beiong raped in broad daylight and people not helping.

Not seen or heard of anything as extreme as this though.

Wasn't it recent that some university did a test to record the actions of others while a child seemingly alone and in distress in a mall? Not one passer stopped to help with the exception of a man. Most of the passers were women.

If you google bystander effect there are some very shocking stories from all over theb world.

It was unbelievable how people paused looked and then walked on. It’s beyond my comprehension how someone could see that and then walk past without helping.

Someone holding a child’s hand walks past and leads their child away :o you couldn’t make it up.

One local Communist party chief urged 'searching reflection' over the incident, according to the official Guangzhou Daily.

'We should look into the ugliness in ourselves with a dagger of conscience and bite the soul-searching bullet.'

perhaps they could start by cracking down on parents like them who despite having good jobs and much higher than average incomes compared to most Chinese, are too bone idle to stop a 2 year old tot from running out on to a busy street in one of the busiest cities in the world, or else too tight to pay for adequate childcare.

Running over people is not uncommon in China, my son goes to China every few months, he told me many times that his taxi driver will just knock a pedestrian out of the way if he can't get through, his friend was in a taxi over there last year, the driver ran over a woman crossing the street, knocked her down , jumped out of the taxi and screamed at her friend for them being in his way, then drove off like nothing happend.
