weddingpics Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 Hi Can anybody suggest or offer work experience for my 14 year old son who needs to find a 2 week 'work experience' post for last week in November / first week in Dec. He is a bright 14 yr old who whilst enjoying all the typical pursuits of a young teenager he has many outside interests including music - he plays cornet in a local brass band, he also plays drums for Sheffield Youth Big Band, Sport - he is a member of Beauchief junior golf club, Hallamshire junior cricket club and also has played competition table tennis for sheffield junior league. At school he is a good 'all rounder' and is in the top sets for all the core subjects. He is looking for something interesting where he may be able to be given a small amount of responsibility (i.e. not just filing and tea making) swell as observing and learning about running a business or in a large organisation. We live in Sheffield 11 and the work experience position needs to be within a short bus journey. Please reply if you have any suggestions or can take him on. Thanks
Billinge Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 Schools often give young people a greater amount of responsibility than other places of work in my experience (of work experience for 14-15 year olds - my Aunt is an assessor for her student's placements), perhaps because they are well aware with what the children are capable of or because they have all the necessary insurance etc in place. Last month my 15 year old sister was given tasks to complete with small groups of children including assisting them with math topics. She also read to the children, lead games in P.E classes and had the opportunity to attend school council meetings etc. A letter stating why your son would like to do his placement with the school and his achievements is normally the way to go forward, although I would recommend that he writes the letter himself.
daz of s12 Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 Hey, I am 15 and did my work experience last school year during the last 2 weeks before we broke up for summer holidays. I would advise your son to look around local businesses and groups which reflects his character. Aswell as he is looking for some where which is a career he is interested in. I went to Darnall Engineering Ltd. for my work experience as i am thinking about a career in engineering and it gives you that insight to that career your interested in so i would let him try and find a placement which reflects upon what he is looking for a career is my greatest advise. I sent lots of letters out to businesses within Sheffield in this career and managed to find the one i did, it just takes some time and effort to find one this is the greatest advice i could give you after i had the experience myself in finding one.
Brian Hanson Posted December 10, 2011 Posted December 10, 2011 Hello weddingpics, What a pity your son isn't 16 years old. If he was I'd offer him a placement right now and teach him how to set up and run a business. Unfortunately your son is only 14 and due to his age he is not allowed to work full time, not even as a volunteer. I'm very sorry I cannot help him. I wish him the very best of luck. It's nice to know some young people are keen to train for work instead of being public layabouts.
Robbyduffy Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Dont get into professional church music... ...or any music

As its only go gain experience for a few weeks I don't think it counts as 'working'. I don't know the regs but I can't see a School asking kids to do something illegal.
adam4321 Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 yeah go to a school, i went to an infant school and it was well fun, went on trips and helped in their sports day, plus you get to finish and start like a normal school day, instead of 9-5. hope it helped
BigDan Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 In my opinion, something related to a hobby / strength in his knowledge would be brilliant. If this is something he wouldn't like to do, my suggestion would be to send him to a profession which is liable to play a big part in the future e.g. SEO website marketing, cars, banking etc
