mrnmrswild Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 Went on a school trip just out of sheffield years ago all i can remember that it was covered in ww2 shells from the gunners training on this particular peice of moorland anybody got any ideas were it is so i can take kids up and show them?

Not for much longer, the scrap men will be there now.
lyme Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 If you walk on the path below Burbage edge the boulders there are strewn with bullet scars, there's the odd mortar scar too. Wherever it was though, the shells will no longer be there.

I believe (may be wrong) that it (where the top dam is) was lit up in WW2 to make it look like Sheffield to confuse enemy bombers. There's certainly loads of craters there. As I say, I could well be wrong ... something I remember my Grandad telling me when I was a kid. I'd like to know more about it.

Weren't there some "practice trenches" dug somewhere around there when soldiers were posted there awaiting their deployment overseas?
