MonkeyLover Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 Years ago, they used to advise new mothers to take salt baths to help with healing, if she has had stitches. I now find that this is no longer advisable - does anyone know why? - is it because of the damage the salt might make to the baths, or is it for the health of the new mum? I am asking because I have a friend who has just given birth - and when she comes home from hospital, thought it might do her good! Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.
Strix Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 oooooooooo - I bet that stings like... As if you wouldn't have suffered enough pain already!
MonkeyLover Posted October 20, 2011 Author Posted October 20, 2011 No, it used to sooth the pain and help the wound heal quicker. I suppose the actual soaking in the warm water would sooth the pain a bit, even without the salt. The salt baths did me a power of good anyway!

I was advised to do this too after the birth of my daughter. It did seem to help & salt is a natural antiseptic. That was 13 years ago although looking on-line it seems as though people are still doing it.
julesmarie Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 I don't see nothing wrong with it,my dentist advises to do salt mouthwash after having a tooth out. I know in no way is that as bad as given birth.
alchresearch Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 I would imagine that creams do the job much better. When I first got a tattoo there was no after-care advice. Now they cling film it and get you to wash it and put on Bepanthen cream regularly.
Fine line Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 A great mental image this thread puts in your mind

alchresearch Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 No. When my OH had my daughter she was recommended creams for the stitches, not something out of the dark ages like a salt bath! Some traditional remedies still have their place but you can't beat 21st century medicine for others. I've got a cut on my hand so I put a bit of Germoline cream on it. Stopped the stinging and is healing nicely. I can carry the little tube anywhere and apply where necessary. I don't relish having to set up a salt water wash for it.

Ah! sorry - it was the word "tattoo" that threw me! OUCH! - the mere thought of it!
