Settee too big to fit through door?

Recommended Posts

It seems that the new settee we have ordered from Atkinsons is much bigger than our door. On the policy we got with the receipt it says that it is our responsibilty to ensure access to the house and that it will fit through the door. But do they not deal with these sorts of problems all the time?

Will they be able to take off our door/ window or will they just leave it for us to deal with? In which case our lovely new expensive settee will be living in the garden.

Has anybody had experiences before of settees not fitting through doors? How far will they help you?

They won't take your door off or window out- they are just delivery people.

If you are likely to need to have the door off or window out then you need to hire somebody to come and do that (and replace them) for the day of your delivery.

If it hasn't yet been tried to be delivered through the door then i would wait and see. The sofa's dimension may be bigger than the door, but the delivery guys should be able to angle it so the arm passes the door post first and follow by the rest of the sofa. You may be suprized.

It is very easy to take a window out (ie the glass only). Do not hire anyone to do this.

We had trouble with ours it did fit through the outside door which is a PVC one . It would not go through the inside one though my husband took off the door himself and then used a chisel to take off an inner piece of the door frame. We could have taken a window out and I do know of people who have done this but we had only just had the windows fitted so decided against that option. Have you measured it in height and width and corner ways it is amazing how many different ways they tried to get ours in as at first it would not even go through the outer door. Failing that I suppose the best that you can hope for is your money back except for the delivery charge.

It does depend on the sofa. Ours came from DFS with the arms off and they were bolted on afterwards. Sofas tend to be designed to fit through 'normal' sized doors so unless yours is exceptionally narrow or the turns required inside very tight, it should find a way in.

A good joiner could chop it in half, and then weld it back together. Might cost a few notes, but at least if saves on wrecking the house.

We had to do that with our sofa. We used same colour carpet tape rather than sewing it back together. Saved us a fortune and hardly noticable when the cushions were in place.

Our sofa was from Atkinsons and definitely wouldn't go through either of the doors, because of tight turns!

It had to come in through the sash window - which meant the delivery men had to lift it up very high, because the house floor is above the level of the garden. They also had to lift it over the garden fence which was, again, well above street level, because they couldn't get it up the steps and round the corner to the front of the bay.

They managed it all fine, probably because I had warned them about the problems they were going to have.

Have a word with them in Atkinsons, they might be able to offer you some advice. But it is your responsibility to make sure it will go in the house, they won't start removing doors/frames/windows to help you out.

Good luck.

There's usually only 6 screws on the door hinges so removing it (which you might have to do yourself) shouldn't be a problem. You don't say whether it's the outside or internal door, I assume it's the outer door. Outer doors are usually 33 ins, and inner 30 ins. They sometimes up-end the settee then"twist" it round one side of the door frame, providing you have enough clearance round one side of the door. Have plenty of sheets ready to drop on the floor for protection.

Yeah its the outer door we're worried about. It only measures 27 inches when open- probably 30 when taken off, but the new settee is 38.6 inches deep and a similar height.

All we can do is be prepared really by the sounds of things, and contact Atkinsons to warn them. Maybe we'll try and have the door off in advance if they don't do that sort of thing.

Thanks to all for the advice

If it wont go through the door ,you could always put it on the back garden and use it for Booze ups . Its all the rage on Parson Cross apparently. :heyhey::heyhey:
