Though I've generally found it better in cities. Sheffs not bad. Never experienced any real homophobia nor have my gay friends. Apart from the fact that a gay friend was beaten up in Attercliffe, coming out of a gay bar, but that was a long time ago.  Generally people are o.k. Occasionally get weird looks holding a partners hand down the street, but get that everywhere. Some people have been stuffy when looking for a 1 bed flat with a partner, but thats about it.  Gay scene, have to admit leaves a lot to be desired. But things are improving. With the advent of Fuel (new night club). Climax (uni night) has always been good. Poptastic and Fairy Liquid (Gay nights) when they happen.  There are several gay bars/pubs. Dempseys of course, a bit of a dive. Club Xces, meat market, but open late. And there are several others that are off the beaten track, but its hard to keep up with whether they are still gay or not as they keep changing management.  Gay scene in Sheff not as good as Manchester, and not quite as good as Leeds. Better than York and the like.  I like Sheffield so much, not that bothered if the scene isn't that great.  (Whoops, you only asked for a sentence on each)
 Share this content via...
Scruff   10 #6 Posted November 23, 2005 im gay and find it quite difficult because i feel i cant walk down the street on a saturday afternoon holding hands with my girlfriend incase i get beaten up. you get the odd w****r who will shout stuff. its not as bad as some places though. as for night life, im not really into the scene, plus majority of my mates are straight. but dont think theres much aapart from seedy dives anyway! pete_jim   10 #10 Posted November 24, 2005 Being Gay in Sheffield is just the same as being Gay anywhere else. Unfortunately this doesn't become apparent until later in life, say post 35. You should concentrate on being yourself, whatever that is.  I've always enjoyed being me, the sexuality thing lends a certain twist to the humour sometimes and I think I can say some of the best times so far were with other gay people but, IMO it's a big mistake to define all aspects of your life by your sexuality.  And I have worked and socialised in some very homophobic environments but not really encountered any serious aggression or problems. It's how you approach life and the people you meet. It is supposed to be easier now and I might have been lucky when I was growing up but I think the pressure to enjoy yourself nowadays is so relentless that it makes it almost impossible for some people to do that.  Got the civil partnership (please, not wedding) booked so that makes pensions and tax easier, and the gent at the town hall was really nice to talk to!
