sheffgrow   10 #1 Posted September 18, 2011 ive just returned from the battle of britain parade at the war memorial where the veterans of ww2 and the air cadets honour the lives of those who fought in the battle of britain, they then usually march down the road to the cathedral with a police escort, Not this year!!!! why? because the police didnt turn up despite the fact that why were informed and asked to attend by the royal british legion and the air cadets, so the march down to the cathedral didnt occur, is this they way we honour people who fought and died for our country? or indeed the young air cadets of this city who do good, this young generation who are not out looting, robbing, drinking, thieving. south yorkshire police are a joke, they can escort football hooligans to the match but not war veterans
 Share this content via...
Winder   10 #2 Posted September 18, 2011 It's a shame the police didn't turn up, after all its just a short distance from the cenotaph to the cathedral.  Next year l would suggest the air cadets have a couple of senior NCOs issued with fluorescent jackets to stop the traffic, perhaps re-routing the march down Fargate.  Inform the police of your intentions, just to keep them in the loop and if they have any objections they could be discussed. NorthernStar   11 #4 Posted September 18, 2011 Well it's a shame the police didn't turn up, but your seriously saying that a bunch of people are not capable of taking that 5 minute walk without a police escort?  Have I understood this correctly? sheffgrow   10 #5 Posted September 18, 2011 (edited) Well it's a shame the police didn't turn up, but your seriously saying that a bunch of people are not capable of taking that 5 minute walk without a police escort? Have I understood this correctly?  in the middle of the road with a marching band and ww2 veterans ? it is generally a nicer march to the service at the cathedral if there is no traffic driving towards them!! POLSKI Â Â 10 #6 Posted September 18, 2011 Par for the course with our wonderful local coppers. They've possibly sent a crime reference number by post ! Just goes to show what a bunch of inefficient, useless pillocks they really are. Still waiting (3 years now) for a court appearance for the scumbag who assaulted my son, witnessed by 7 people........but they're quick to issue motorists with tickets......EASY MONEY ! Square-Bashe   10 #7 Posted September 18, 2011 It was a real shame not to have the police support at the parade this afternoon. There was police support last year and the parade went very well. It was great to see all of the Air Cadets on parade, showing that there are young men and women who will give up a part of their weekend to honour and remember those who fell in the Battle of Britain and the Battle of Arnhem and not to sit at home in front of the TV or their games console as it seems so many do.  It was also great to see the few veterans who were able to turn out for the parade as well. Sadly, year by year the number of the Vets reduce, but one hopes that their memory and sacrafices lives on through these parades attended by the 'next generation' in the Air Cadets.. All due to Health and safety.
 Share this content via...

Square-Bashe   10 #12 Posted September 19, 2011 It isn't OTT as such. The parade consited of about 110 cadets plus 15 or so staff, the Oughtibridge Brass Band, the standard bearers so for the Police were needed for the parade to proceed along the road safely. You have to bear in mind that as there were cadets involved there is a duty of care over them and due to insurances and permissions given by Headquarters Air Cadets, the parade would only have been permitted to proceed along the intended route with Police supervision. As it happened, the parade marched in single file to the catherderal which was a shame.
 Share this content via...
