Bulgarian   10 #25 Posted August 25, 2011 is the next thing the actual normalisation of prostitutes and pornstars on mainstream tv?  I don't see whats "abnormal" about those two professions, they provide a service for which there is a demand. Lady Star   10 #26 Posted August 25, 2011 Sorry to bring politics into it but for me the Labour party are at fault for a lot of the social ills of this country, yes the Thatcher government de-industrialised Britain which had a devastating effect on communities, but I'm talking about decency and morals. It took hundreds of years to happen, but the early part of the 20th century was when this country, on the whole, became civilised with high standards of moral decency, even the working class masses that that lived in slums were, on the whole, good people with self respect and structured lives. I could go on and on and on here but basically, the left of Labour viewed/views traditional social norms as outmoded nonsense, and so has spent decades attempting to do away with them, and it looks like they have been quite succesful, it seems that all the worst parts of Britain where there is high unemployment, little or no discipline in schools and high teenage pregnancy etc, are in the places where Labour lefties run the local authority.  I don't think your social history is particularly good - the early 20th Century had many of todays social ills - gang activity in Sheffield peaked in the 1920's, poverty was the norm, and this bred violence and robberies... The media was still little more than a few news reels and the press were often loathe to lay things bare... People feel more 'at risk' now, as we get to hear about people being attacked, people behaving like thugs in the street, etc almost as soon as it has happened, even though few of us know those such acts have happened to... Things haven't really chamged - human nature can be selfish and cruel at times, and some people display these traits more readily than others...  Plus, teenage pregnancy/illegitimacy have been with us for many many years - People used to 'go away' to have babies which may or not return with the mother back home... Mother's claimed their errant offsprings progeny as their own...
 Share this content via...
donkey   10 #27 Posted August 25, 2011 This thread seems to have wandered off topic a bit.  There are still some social taboos, ie subjects which most people are uncomfortable talking/joking about, or being confronted with in the media  death (but not funerals) cancer - the physical reality of it paedophilia incest menstruation and the menopause religious beliefs (except in controlled contexts) older people's sexuality/sex lives  to name but a few  Absolutely! There's about 3,000, and a lot of them involve things that are quite inoccous, but raise uncomfortable issues of conditioned behaviour and widely accepted social prejudices.
