Alaskan Malamute - Advice and Questions Welcome!

Recommended Posts

There are larger teams, 6 and 8 dog teams aren't uncommon. The 2 dogs in the photo normally run as part of a 6 dog team. :)

This time of the year for the most part, it is either too warm or humid to run them unless your out first thing in the morning or last thing at night.

Through the winter months, there are a couple of teams that train in Grenoside woods. Weekend mornings are when they head up there. Most of the local teams train at Sherwood. Through winter, there is normally quite a turn out on a Sunday afternoon.

There are also organised rallies in winter throughout Yorkshire- details can be found on the Siberian Husky Club website. Spectators are always welcome and you'll find plenty of people happy to chat dogs all day. :hihi:

I would LOVE to visit these events even before we get our pup! Where can I fond details?x

Thank you :) I will have to look into it :) I've got quite into all the doggy sports since doing agility and although my dog is too chilled to be much good at many of them (he's a slow but steady type) it gives me ideas for the future!

Shame there is not a sport in tarting yourself for tummy rubs and pork scratchings as D would win a gold medal!

I'd love to get our mal doing agility(as showing is not for us...as far as i can see) went to a dog show other week round the corner from our house. Is great seeing all the different breeds together! Would have been way too hot for them that day though!! x

I'm putting this at the end of all my messages so you can check out some of my pages for our pup:

I think it's true of most working breeds.

I said exactly the same thing before offering my first moot his forever home. :hihi: I'd researched them extensively before concluding that with the mix of dogs we already had, a Mal probably wasn't right for us. Then somehow we ended up with a Mal here whos transport run had fallen through. When that one went, another took it's place and we've had a steady stream of fosters ever since.

When Nook arrived (seriously screwed up and aggressive) his choices were to stay here or be pts. My exact words were "it's one thing taking them in and putting them back together but it's another taking responsibility for all the ups and downs for the next 10+ years." Heart over-ruled head though and he's made a nice lad. I figured after Nook, I could cope with anything so we're now a 4 Mal household. :hihi:

That's great!x

Ruffles, I'm sure that if I ended up with a moot, I'd adjust my lifestyle to accomodate it (I have for the dals) and would most likely end up with a dog walker due to my disability, and I reckon that'd be the case with everything. The two dallies I have now and the dal I lost to old age and kidney failure last May are all different, and you find yourself making changes to cope with them.

Probably a good idea for me to not get landed with one at all though - because there's no way it'd go anywhere once it had arrived!! And, like you, I'd most likely get another when that one went!

edit: I just realised... I did have one for a night! (I don't know if it was a sibe or a mute because it's owner said it was an alaskan husky which I've never heard of!)

She'd been on the run for 5 hours when I found her trudging her way up the road whilst walking my dally. Should've seen the look on my mother's face when I walked through the door with a 'husky' as well as the dog I'd left with!

It was a Sunday evening so couldn't contact the police (it was back when the police dealt with lost dogs) so she ended up staying the night and we sent emails to all the radio stations.

Absolutely lovely dog, she slept in my room (because my mum was concerned she may turn on our dog so said she had to stay in my room - thanks mum!) and was as good as gold - but obviously, I found out later that she'd been running 5 hours and was usually much more lively!

Crazy story!x

I see exactly where you're coming from and think your post was really very constructive Ruffles- if the OP was thinking about GSDs I'd be posting pretty much the same for them, just as Strix would be doing the same for beagles.

The time to make sure that people are going to have the right dog for them is BEFORE they get the pup/dog, in order that they can prevent the issues rather than having to address them later on when it's much harder.

If I could have that sort of sit down talk with everybody who thinks that they're ready for a young GSD then maybe I could prevent some of the issues- just maybe.

I really hope that the OP's research has led to the right decision on which sort of dog to get. I know it wouldn't be the right choice for me, but they're beautiful dogs :)

Thank you for your concerns :D You're right, it is so important that people know exactly what they could be letting themselves into!! I'm so glad there are caring people around to be there to give this advice :)

If you're interested on seeing how the pups are doing and following my puppy's progress..and ours as owners! lol I have started some pages/blogs for when we get to bring him home :)

Hi I really enjoy reading you post I seen a lot of characteristics in this in ours and very informative. She did turn into nightmare when hitting teenager this is something husky welfare said too. She can be stubborn and have selective deafness. It been hard in away for us cause she mal x husky and there very little information on these. So i have read lots on husky and mal. I took worst bit from both and hope for best. She been a nightmare at time but talking to other mal and husky owners I think we got good mix cause she can go off lead and is quiet chilled till we leave her.

She only shorted haired and seem to be suffering with heat this year we just make sure walk near water.

I have so many people say they love husky or mal and I always say they not for faint hearted. We did a lot of research first but still was not prepared. But we not been put off and hopefully have another one next year. Hopefully we learn for mistakes I not deluded though that it be easy cause I know it wont. I would not have another type of dog now. She can be a pain but she so rewarding and loving.

Thank you for joining this discussion :) I hear so often that mal/huskies are hard work but the rewards out weigh it all :D I think you get out as much as you put in to your dog(if not more) x

Oh, too scary for me! I'd fall off my bike!

I'd definitely get a husky rig (three wheel bike/slay contraption) and have a go at that, much more steady :hihi:

Good point I may start off with the three wheeler! :P x

I know of a couple of huskies that start hatching escape plans as soon as they've had a drink after a day of fell running with their owner. The first time they made a proper bid for freedom they'd just done 8 hours of cross country running with their owner (who does endurance running and triathlons, so if any dogs should be well exercised it should be hers) and still jumped a 6' wall to escape, and were found 20 miles away only a few hours later.

Some dogs just have that urge and will do it whether they're tired or not- unfortunately you don't know whether you're getting one like that until you've had them for a while.

True. They are all individual as well even if they are all roughly the same. I have heard huskies are more prone to escape though? Hav eyou come across this rumour?x

Very cute, I bet you cannot wait to go and see him :) I waited over 5 years until I was in a situation for a dog (mines just a mutt, but a well loved mutt  ) it makes it even more exciting!

Mutts are lovely too!! I love all dogs :)

While me and my husband went to live with my nannan(to save bit more money for house), the three of us went to get a rescue dog. I was brought up with by my nannnan. Born into a house with two alsations :D I loved them to pieces! They were very lovely friendly girls but protective as anything if anyone looked dodgy or if any dog came too close to us being boistrous etc:/ Not a great trait in a dog really... but they both came to my nannans house as strays really so never trained them from pups.

They both died by the time i was 12. They lived a long and happy life but, losing our girls was really hard. The last one to die used to sleep on my bed for comfort. We never let her normally but we knew she was on her way out and liked being with me. I need to find some photos out and get them online :)

Saying she'd never get another dog(becasue it hurt too much when they go) she finally came round and decided she did want another dog. So we went to RSPCA together and got Ziggy! We think he's a staffy, lab cross? He sometimes looks a bit ridgeback too...He's lovely! He's been a handful at times but he's getting a good boy now :) Real sweet personality. But if a dog starts on him he gives back. And i'm afraid he'd win if it got serious...

Got him nearly a year ago now and he was about 4 years old they thought.

Though we've just got our own place last month we still go round to see him(and my nannan of course) he gets so excited when we go round. We miss him! My nannan says he misses us too :D He howls a bit like a mal too! We love that! I should put some pics up of Ziggy too!!
