HS2 train stop in Sheffield

Any HS2 station in Sheffield/South Yorkshire will be nowhere near Sheffield City Centre. It will be a "parkway" stop (similar to how East Midlands Parkway station is a few miles away from the airport that bears its name) and will be located near a junction of the M1.

 

Or, there wont be a stop in South Yorkshire, which is more likely.

City centres are totally unsuitable for new rail projects like this without the costs going into the billions. Houses are in the way, unsuitable earth for tunneling, compulsary purchase orders, expensive tunnels, existing rail networks to negotiate...

 

Hence why any stops outside of London and the intended terminus are likely to be parkway stations.

Ok. It's Tinsley marshalling yards between the Parkway and the M1 adjacent to the soon to be no more Sheffield Airport.

Ah ok. In which case occasional freight services still use the line between the junction behind TGI Fridays to the works at Tinsley so it may impact on those.

 

Would be interesting to see the actual route to see if it uses any of the "Old Road" line from Rotherham to Chesterfield via Beighton.

If there is a stop, it's pretty likely to be at the old Tinsley yard.

 

That site has lots of good points, but high-speed rail access to it would need a lot of work - how would you build a line north from there which didn't either involve a tight corner or demolishing Meadowhall?

 

If they use the old line, another possible site would be near Beighton, where the Mosborough Parkway crosses the Rother. It's got good road access, and the Lincoln line could be used to provide a connecting service to the city centre.

The nearest HS2 stop to Sheffield will probably be Manchester or Leeds!

 

Has anyone used HS1? it's not all it's cracked up to be, travelling to North Kent you come off the high speed lines and are then held up by the "stoppers" from Victoria, so you lose any time gained.

 

I hope we get a HS2 stop, but I doubt it.

The best spot for a HS2 stop would be near Nunnery Square, there is a vast tract of wasteland there, easily big enough for a new station. Plus it's just minutes from town and already has a tram connection,it's the perfect site really.

a) conflicting with existing lines

b) without destroying hundreds of homes and factories?
