Your eye for composition, depth of field, use of thirds and colour is very good indeed. Keep your mind open to different types of photography although there is nothing wrong with specialising in a particular area. The professional photography world is a tough one to crack but keep your portfolio up to date and think about uploading your images to stock photography websites. This is great for publicity if nothing else. You may find yourself doing a lot of work for free or very cheap to start with but this will improve if you stay competitive. Get yourself on twitter and create a facebook group to promote your work. Word of mouth is the best way to make yourself known so keep in touch with your clients and keep them happy. If you would like any more advice please feel free to get in touch.

Hi Bunderson,

Thankyou and i will do i used to do a lot of landscapes but at the moment i love doing macro shots as i think they show the true beauty of things that people would often take no notice on. I also like doing photography of people i prefer the natural shots when people don't play up for the camera I think these make the best photo's. Well I thought it would be tough that's why I thought I would do a different course at college one with more jobs at the end of it. What are stock photo websites? and thanks a place where I volunteer now know I do photograph and think I am quite good at it and they was on about me doing the shots for there publicity. and thanks any advice you can give me will be appreciated as you have to learn from somebody and nobody has taught me anything apart from the rule of thirds. As one day I would love to do it as a job if i could find somewhere that would have me.

Thanks

Keeley

Hi Keeley.

Stock photography websites are a place where you can upload your photographs, give them meaningful names so people can find them using a search (tags) and then you can sell copies of them or rights to use them. http://www.istockphoto.com/ is the major site where you can upload your work. Take an hour to browse the site to get a feel for what sort of images sell. Corporate and outdoor ones seem to work the best (people in meetings, sat at their desk on the phone and people walking through fields etc) so do nature and wildlife. You have a few of these types of images already so get them categorized and uploaded. Also take a while to read up on image copyrighting and transfer of ownership of photographs (search on google) to save you headaches in the long run.

If you are struggling for corporate photographs, approach some small to medium sized businesses and offer to take their corporate photographs free of charge for them to use on their website and corporate material. You maintain copyright to your work so you can use them elsewhere as long as you have a model release form from the person you photographed (I have a template you can have if you want it). The model release basically states that the person you took the shots of is allowing you to use the image wherever you desire. Some models may want to add clauses to the form, such as they do not wish the image to be used in advertisements for contraception, drug awareness, etc etc. Normally however this is not an issue.

You can keep detail in the sky without using ND grads if you are happy to do a bit of post-processing and create a tone-mapped or HDR image.

The best way to do this is to bracket your exposures - so you take 5 pictures at 2 stop intervals (-4, -2, 0, +2, +4) and blend them together.

So faced with a sunny scene you might shoot

1/2000 f16 (4 stops under)

1/500 f16 (2 stops under)

1/125 f16 ('correct')

1/30 f16 (2 stops over)

1/8 f16 (4 stops over)

you can get software to blend them for you (HDRtist for Mac is good, as is gtpsfgui - there will be windows versions) or you can do it yourself in Photoshop. I believe the newer versions have automated tools to do it for you.

If you shoot RAW files you can get a decent result from a single image, which is obviously useful if you are shooting a moving subject or portrait.

EDIT - meant to say you can see the effect here Beating the Bulldogs (not my pictures, sadly!)
