We used to use the word gowl for something that wasn't very nice.

Yes my mum used to call it Gowl I had forgotten about that one!:D

A 1970's BBC 2 programme called call my bluff featured the word gowly and it was described as eye gunk.

I always remember the expression gowl in yer eyes referring to the stuff in the corner of your eye when you woke. My mum and grandma used the term when we lived in Wath 50-60 years ago.

With my Mum it was Gunk in the corner of your eye, or Clag if your eye lashes were stuck up with  yukky stuff!
