woZa   10 #13 Posted May 17, 2011 This is the reply I got today. Thank you for your email of 30th April regarding the green sacks collections service.    We are currently in discussions with our contractor Veolia with a view to introducing changes to the green sacks collection service to make it easier for residents to use. One of these changes includes the introduction of scheduled collections which will mean that households receive a collection calendar showing when the sacks will be collected (removing the need for residents to contact Veolia to arrange a collection).    Whilst storage issues on the vehicles, and the reliability of using crews to replenish bags after each collection, means that this isn’t an option we are looking at, we are exploring whether we could allow residents the choice to provide their own green sacks. This will allow residents the choice to collect sacks free of charge from libraries/housing offices etc, or to buy them from supermarkets – whichever is easiest. Although no decision has been taken on this as yet, it is expected that one will be made within the next few weeks.    Kind regards,  Neil Townrow Waste Management Officer Sheffield City Council Tel: 0114 2037622  Which totally counters the information I received today from Veolia "customer services". So much for working "closely with the council".
 Share this content via...
samsmum   10 #14 Posted May 17, 2011 we have just moved to s5 after living on arbourthorne - we had a green bin for garden waste there ... emptied fortnightly over the summer, monthly over the winter.  i was a bit miffed to find they dont have them over this side of town:(
 Share this content via...
curious   10 #15 Posted May 17, 2011 so bizarre, we've never had a problem. And, in fact, have been supplied with non branded green sacks before. which, might i add were much better quality. maybe I'm lucky and my bin man isn't a jobs worth! it does seem absolutely ludicrous though doesn't it? Tatman   10 #16 Posted May 17, 2011 The clue is in your own post..... VEOLIA! they are the ones who say you have got to use their green sacks, they are the ones running the scheme. Also, if you had done a bit of research you'd realise that you have to use their bags instead of just assuming that you can use what ever you like.  Get a life:P
 Share this content via...
curious   10 #17 Posted May 17, 2011 Of course I have a black bin. The point is to try to recycle the waste into compost and not take up valuable space in the already over stretched land fill sites...  you're not supposed to use your black bin for garden waste. apparently they will refuse to collect if they spot the garden waste in it... curious   10 #18 Posted May 17, 2011 Because the service is supposed to be available to have the waste collected. Not everyone has a car or other means of transport to get items to the tip either. You need to leave out at least 3 bags before they will collect them.  the service seems so different depending on where you live. we only have a small to medium sized garden to 1-2 bags to collect max and never had a problem. BigAl#13 Â Â 10 #19 Posted May 17, 2011 To counter act all of this, why do they not just give everyone a green waste bin, and pick that up in a truck every fortnight. Would solve a shed load of problems r.e. green sacks with and without the "right" marking.
 Share this content via...
mike47   10 #20 Posted May 17, 2011 The green bags are a pain as people who use them nearly always then leave them on the pavement which they're not supposed to do. Veolia can then take up to four weeks in which to collect them which is just plain silly  Once Veolia provide dates for scheduled collections, hopefully residents will put the green bags outside their property only at the beginning of that week. NO I DONT THINK SO... this council has gone potty, maybe some people would like to put there garden rubbish away straight away instead of making endless calls and e-mails and dont get a responce just to get a few refuse sacks when they only have to go to the shop and get some.... whiteowl   54 #22 Posted May 18, 2011 Just had the lorry back up our cul-de-sac to collect some green bags left out by our neighbour. They took half of them and left the other half....
 Share this content via...
chocki   13 #23 Posted May 18, 2011 If you aren't suppose to put garden waste in the black bins, how come my gardener does. Is this just my gardener or do all gardeners do this!
 Share this content via...
crookesey   635 #24 Posted May 18, 2011 I'm back to using the normal bin, typical of this city, we get something that works and then ruin it.
 Share this content via...
