The IKEA in Sheffield thread

Recommended Posts

can you imagine the knock on effect to the M1?

Its bad enough just with Meadowhall.

They had to build a new junction of the motorway for the first IKEA in Warrington!

It will not be built in that area, there will just too much impact on the local highway network.

I thought it was built because of other factors - the closing of the Westbound motorway services (all directions use the Eastbound one which is off the roundabout), the rest of the Gemini retail park, the new housing estate, and the Omega development.

The sabotage processes that SCC implement on the development of our city (refusal of IKEA, Next, BMW, & a dozen other investment projects) almost starts to look like a strategy in itself - although to what end, I can't imagine.

It seems the council are hell bent on killing off retail in the city center once and for all. There can be no other explanation for their bizarre decisions. If proof of this was needed then last weeks announcement of a 17% hike in parking charges in the city center says it all.

I heard there is going to be an Ikea built near Meadowhall. Opening next year. A friend of a friend of a friend knows someone who is going to be working on it. Not sure if it's true though.

I went to Southampton a few years ago and even though the place is much smaller than Sheffield they have a great shopping centre and an ikea right next to it....http://www.west-quay.co.uk/. As others have mentioned, Liverpool, Bristol and Leeds city centres to name a few are also miles ahead of ours... in my opinion we are falling behind all the other cities by a long way and definately in need of an ikea and many other big stores to attract people in

Correct. Sister-in-law moved to Great Sankey (posh Warrington) nearly 20 years ago. Proximity to Ikea not a factor - proximity to motorway network with a planned junction a huge factor - OK like many others they used the service road in and out of the services for a few years to get to the motorway.

We've bought some stuff from there and been quite happy with it - but some folk seem to think that having an Ikea is the be all and end all. Sad :(

No one seems to have picked up the fact that IKEA do have city centre stores (or at least one) that works very successfully. The IKEA store in Coventry is in the city centre and works very well. Rather than being on one floor, the store is spread across 3 or 4 floors with travelators and lifts proving the routes between departments. The upper part of the building is the multi-storey carpark which is free if customers spend more than £10. If IKEA can do this in Coventry, why can't they do this in Sheffield?

They won't be making the mistake of building another store like this one, it makes WAY less money than other stores and was actually operating at a loss after 2 years of trading, It's actually 8 floors and a nightmare to shop in. Yes even worse than a normal IKEA.

The warrington store was the first IKEA in the UK. The impact in sheffield wont be nearly as big as this one.

Their price/quality ratio still can't be touched by any UK retailer that I know.

It's not premium of course (IKEA was originally created/devised for kitting out 'poor students'...and they still stick close to this approach, by and large), but you just can't find better quality for their prices. Nor modern/design furniture, for that matter.

(I should know a thing or two about that, seeing as we're kitted out with all of centuries-old solid wood pieces, more recent bespoke solid wood pieces, premium modern 'design' pieces, and cheaper M&S/IKEA pieces).

I decided on IKEA leather settees in August 2008 when we got back to the UK, more as a stop-gap than anything. Cheap for the design and materials at the time, and we needed to re-kit pretty much from scratch. They've been in our conservatory ever since (which we use as our lounge), in daily use. As it turns out, not a single blemish, no discolouration, no sagging, no nothing. Literally in the same condition as the day we bought them close to 5 years ago. That's with a young age kid, a dog (not supposed to be allowed on them, but we're not robots/monitoring 24/7), and a lot of socialising.

When the one in Manchester opened I noticed a distinct permanent drop in traffic at Warrington.
