If you were in charge of the country for a year, how would you improve it?

Recommended Posts

The cuts are biting, more so for the the people at the lower end of the pay scale, and the pain is coming...........however.........

As the title says, if you were in charge of the country. What path would the country take under your leadership to improve things? here would be my way of running the country

1) Withdraw our troops from all foregn lands that do not want us there - this would save billions, it would also go a long way to breaking the back of terrorism. People in those lands sort out their own problems

2) withdraw foregn aid, or reduce it drastically, (say up to 95%)

3) Referedum on continued membership of the EU. If people wish to continue paying, and the yes vote is resounding, continue as we are - this also puts this argument to bed once and for all (similar to the Alternative Voting system)

With the money save from points 1 and 2 .....and possibly 3

1) Start a massive house building programme, put the tradesmen back in work who then spend money on other things and boost other small businesses. This would also bring down the cost of owning a home, and make a home affordable for our young

2) Invest heavily in skills training for our young

3) Invest heavily in manifacturing, so the young being trained can take up these jobs.

4) Become a self sufficient nation, reopen the coal mines and potentially export power back out to the world

5) With people in work, drastically reduce welfare spending - make it unviable to not have the option to not work.

6) invest in our road system, support the NHS and get rid of silly beauracracy

7) Crack down heavily on crime, make the criminals fear the law and not punish the law abiding

id suggest rather than building lots of new homes, to restore the ones we already have that you see boarded up. We dont have endless space to build houses, and in doing so we compromise green space

I'd scrap the nuclear deterrent, but still make out like we still have it. Build the shells of the nuclear subs but fill them with housebricks instead.

Top bit

1) So what if terrorists attack british interests abroad?

2) would that damage trade links?

3)A no vote? See 2

Bottom bit

1) What are the trades people going to do when the houses have been built?

2) Skills are always handy but we are unable to export stuff because of cheap foreign labour, so the market it is limited.

3) See 2

4) Would be good for us though the nation might get fined for GH emissions. Export? See 2

5) Some people just don't want to work end of. Would you let them starve? Think of all the legislation other countries would just love to batter us with.

6) This is two points isn't it? I'm all for a better NHS and roads

7) Criminals already fear the law and if you don't break the law you are not punished (miscarriage of justice aside)

It's not a matter of how to improve a country. We all have ideas about that. It's a matter of having the money in the national budget to be able to make those impovements.

Jacking up everybody's taxes isn't the solution either.

This sounds like an economic utopia sue's budgie..the kind of world that we dream about but in reality cant really have.

Despite our geographical status, we're not an island in the scheme of things, in other words we can't pull the draw bridge up and isolate ourselves from what happens in the rest of the world without there being negative consequences.

For a start, we trade with it, we're also dependent on the relative stability of other world economies and political stability-hence the foreign aid and the reluctant necessity that we poke our nose in other people's business militarily.

Investing heavily in manufacturing is of course a good idea, but we cant just sell the products produced to ourselves, there might not exist a domestic market that would sustain that, after all would we ever again buy British cars or electrical goods in significant numbers when a German/Japanese car offers better quality and the Chinese make cheaper computers and televisions?

Opening up the pits is also quite fanciful, it may be sitting under our land but it might not be cost effective to dig it out. Also being self sufficient has potential cost implications, do you believe the general public would take advantage of self sufficiency if it was costing them more to be so?

The other factor to bear in mind is that many foreign companies own substantial assets in the UK, nearly 40% of the UK's economic infrastructure is foreign owned.

It may be tempting to say we should compulsory purchase these assets so we retain control over them, but at what cost and how would the money be raised? If investment was limited to British investors then that would obviously affect values negatively, as the market for resale would be limited.

Evict the aristocracy from stately homes etc convert and fill them with the common people rather than stick them is ****holes we consider housing. Let them have a nice view.

Put the Royals and their limpets to work..motorway maintenance or sum such. Liz can go in a home play bingo and sit in her own pi55.

Heavily invest in public transport.

Reduce family ownership of vehicles to 2 per household. (Non applicable if it's totally Green)

Scrap Nuclear deterrent.

Get rid of the likes of A4e and invest in our kids, non of the existing sham the tax payer funds.
