I drove past Owlerton today, didn't see anything so drove straight past - I didn't realise it wasn't in the car park :\

We went to Thorpe Hesley and I have to agree re the parking, the organisers didn't seem to know what they were doing, we were directed onto the road by someone, when there was a queue of cars coming the other way! Got onto the field and people were just stood around ignoring the free for all the field had become.

If they put cones on both sides of the road, it would stop the insane parking by people who don't want to pay 50p.

we were approached today by someone wishing to rent part of the car park to hold sales through the winter. Feed back from this forum will be a great help with deciding this. We will be in discussion with the individual on Monday as it isn't quite as simple as moving to the car park as we can't encroach onto the casino or damage business of companies already paying us rent. Please leave comments as we would like to continue but only if it is worth doing so. In answer to your question, at this moment no but that could change Monday afternoon. Many thanks.

What kind of "sales" are we talking about? People want an all year round car boot sale, and Owlerton Car Park is the ideal place to have one. Why are you not listening to the people on The Forum? You appear to want to make a success of the car boots, but do silly things to spoil it! Having a car boot sale in your own car park would not encroach on the casino - you ensure that their frontage is left clear. And what companies are actually trading on the car park at 6 am on a Sunday morning? And lastly, if you can't hold the car boot sale because of these poor excuses, how can someone else make it a success. Surely they would have the same restrictions? Shame on you! :loopy::loopy::help:

To be fair, when I arrived at around 7am people were still leaving the casino and taxis were pulling up. If there were queues to get in to the car boot I'm sure these people wouldn't be happy. The entrance/exit could get very busy.

I think the organiser is trying his best but we do not know the full picture regarding his duties to other customers paying good rent to use his carpark.

To be honest no-one has really given him a chance. He has made mistakes and tried to rectify these to some extent. Some forum posters have given him a hard time but would any of us take on the job?

He will probably have made losses trying to get this started.

And before anyone asks "do I know him?" the answer is no.

Just think we should lend our support to this as it could be a real winner.

I for one do not want to have to travel to Barnsley for a winter car boot. ;)

I'm not giving them a hard time, I would like to see this to work. I take on board your comments about the casino and taxis pulling up at 7 am, but surely this would be the same problem if a private operator rented the car park. Why not start the car boot sale at a later time, say 9am? This would alleviate this problem. Why on earth they all start so early is beyond me. There is no fixed rule that car boots should start at 6am, I have visited some that start later - Twin Oaks, prime example. Starts Saturday dinner time and it is huge.

I think they have tried very hard to make this event work, but appear not to get the right advice. However, credit to them they have taken on board comments about 70p entrance fee for buyers, and they have now dropped this. Hurray! I wish them well. :)

In answer to your questions

1) The Casino own one fifth of the car park between the hours of 5pm and 7am on Sunday morning. The entire left side in front of the casino.

2) The Church utilize the upper part of the car park next to Penistone road.

3) The Motor Bike training school utilize another fifth of the car park directly in the centre between 8.30am and 5pm.

By those silly mistakes I assume you mean charging entry fees and times? Those silly mistakes were to cover the costs of public liability insurance, Market license fees and wages of the staff we require on the property under the Safety at Sports Grounds Act 1975. We did not want to waiver this cost, and in turn charge traders more. Anyway, we are now looking at moving areas of car park ownership around to try to utilize the greatest amount of free space possible. Should this prove successful we will then be applying for planning permission to hold the carboot then we will be talking about suitable times to hold an event and from the posts already made I am led to believe an afternoon one would be preferable? I believe from your post you are not too clued up with actually organising events.

I agree a later start would be good. We all like a lie in :)

I have been to twin oaks recently and it's a bit of a nightmare getting in the car parks, also they now charge £1 per person which is pretty steep considering we arrived a 1pm and due to a sudden downpour (bloody weather) traders were coming out and packing up earlier.

When you have travelled 40 mins to get there it's a bit disappointing to say the least. I know this cannot be helped but if it was a local one like owlerton it wouldn't be too bad.

I hope whatever is decided we get a good local car boot throughout the winter. :)

Thanks for the explanation - but how on earth do you expect us common people to know all this info. What we see is a perfectly good car park not being used. Now I know, I understand your predicament. I do hope that you will continue with the car boots, its what Sheffield people want and need, and it would seem that Hillsborough is the place to do it. And don't judge a book by its cover!!!???;)
