Finding Employment

Recommended Posts

Hi new to the Sheffield Forum. Are there any links to 17 year olds seeking employment? My son is 17 and currently works for Kier through CTS on Division Street. Unfortunately this finishes at the end of May and boy oh boy has he tried to get alternative employment for when he finishes. He is a lad who is willing to give 110% and in his own admittance prefers manual labour to sitting behind a desk! He is a good time keeper, honest, reliable and works as part of a team as well as working on his own initiative, he has a lovely sense of humour and he is very polite!. He is desperate to find work for when he finishes and wouldn't let any prospective employer down. He lives in the S35 area. Can anyone help this is a lad who wants to WORK for a living not CLAIM BENEFITS!! Thank you:help:

Wish your son all the luck.

I believe this generation of kids will be very similar to the generation that left school in the early 1990s when it comes to finding work.

What can be done?

What has he been learning at Kier/CTS? if it is a trade, could he possibly have a go at setting up a business using the skills he has gained?

As you mentioned he can't drive, so this maybe a stmbling block.

If he can't go it alone, would he be happy to get into retail in a Supermarket like Tesco. In the long term it could prove to be a very good career

Ahhh bless, he sounds like a good lad with a great work ethic and lots of get up and go. If he's confident and personable, maybe he could go into a few companies with his CV and see if there are any opportunities coming up which they'd consider him for? Get in there first and beat the crowds.

I'm sure that he'll get something soon. Best of luck to him

Shell, I am touched by your lads plight, been there myself. The only thing I can think of at the moment is a cleaning job, learn the business, learn to drive, then specialise. Or try the wholesale market traders at Parkway, lots of contacts to be made. Ill pm you if I hear of owt.

Thanks :)

I think it looks good, shows potential employers that the young lad has plenty of initiative, is confident and is serious about finding work. Plus there's the added bonus of meeting him rather than trying to imagine how he might be from a CV alone if there were an opportunity available.

You don't mention what trade he is. I would suggest he register with as many agencies (try dutton international) if his skillset lie within the construction sector.

In this game, it really is a case of making the right contacts. Maybe he could find out what new build/refurb projects are on the go nearby, try major housebuilders taylor wimpey, barratts, etc. Write prospective emails to contract managers, walk onto sites, take in a cv, introduce yourself and build a rapport with the foremen. The housing market is slow but it is picking up gradually.

If your son puts the effort in, the rewards WILL come.

Recent Tax Reforms haven't exactly made it inspiring nor financially lucrative to set up your own business and ridiculous fuel costs don't particularly encourage new drivers either.
