Local Elections..Election Literature

Recommended Posts

Hi folks the only election literature received at Russell towers is from the Socialist party, have had the vote yes and vote no info for the AV vote.

Usually get some stuff through from the Greens and the Lib Dems...very surprised not to see anything from the Labour Party and as for the Tories can't ever remember seeing anything from them.

So far in Walkley:

Labour - glossy, professional looking leaflet but not much about the candidate (who lives 8 miles away). Also a knock on door over the bank holiday weekend from a friendly chap.

Lib Dem - 3 leaflets and a personally addressed letter. The usual Lib Dem style. A bit too earnest, very anti-Labour, but good effort and fairly positive message.

Green - had one from local candidate, quite a good positive message.

Also something from some sort of far-left party that I can't remember. Mostly focused on cuts.

Nothing at all from tories yet - not holding my breath.

Also had a couple of glossy, professional communications from the referendum campaigns -

2 from Yes, disappointingly low on substance and full of vague statements about AV.

1 from No, even more low on substance and containing a few outright lies about AV.

All in all a pretty disappointing selection.

So not long now before these take place. Has anyone actually had a visit from a prospective local councillor? My house appears to have been rather quite with no calls or leaflets.....not that I am bothered like because the leaflets go in the bin.

But what is it like in other areas? Are you getting the "vote for me" rammed down your throat or is it rather quiet around your area as well? These people want your vote but at the moment appears that they do not want to do any work for it

I've only seen people canvassing in Chesterfield. I've not seen a great deal of election literature regarding either local elections or the AV referendum.

I haven't seen too many election posters, save for a few Green party posters in central Sheffield either.

I haven't been visited by any of the main candidates here in Walkley.

I did email Labour to ask about their leaflet, but didn't get a reply. I guess they're assuming that a backlash against the Lib Dems will make it an easy win so they don't need to make much of an effort to engage with voters.

If they are, it's sloppy thinking and a dangerous assumption to make.

Any backlash against the Lib-Dems for "siding with the Tories" will only come from people who prefer Labour; in Sheffield, the people voting for the Lib-Dems are the one who do not prefer Labour, and the Tories are a bad third.

How is a candidate going to be able to visit 8,000 houses, particularly if you expect them just in the few weeks' run up to the election?

I've had three leaflets from the LibDems, and one each from Labour, SocEquality, Green, YesAV and NoAV.

Um... I was just answering the OP's question. I agree: it would be nice to see a candidate canvassing, but I don't necessarily expect to.

I would expect responses to emails asking simple questions though.

Just because someone hasnt knocked on your dorr it doesn't mean they dont work hard all year round.

Can you understand the contractions in your post? You don't want leaflets through the door or canvassers ramming their policies down your throat yet you do want your representatives , or prospective ones at least , to work hard to deserve your vote?
