Animal volunteering in Sheffield?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I hope this is the right place to asked - I figured this is where the animal lovers would be! Even if the question isn't strictly about pets.

I'd love to do some volunteering with animals of some description over the summer (I am a student), I've been looking online at websites/etc but I don't drive (or have a car!) and everywhere I have found is too far away to get to reasonable by public transport.

I'm living in the S10 area and am willing to go anywhere I can walk to or use public transport to get to, as long as it doesn't take a matter of hours!

So I was wondering if anyone here knew anywhere that would welcome volenteers that I could get to easily? I'm very willing to learn and help :D

Thank you all very much

:) best wishes x

I am almost 100% sure that there is a cat protection centre near S10. Failing that, just out of town (S3) its literally 2 minutes from West Bar roundabout is the council pound that will accept your help :)

Where abouts in S10 could you get to? The Sheffield Cats Shelter is in S10- it's in Broomhall, quite near to the roundabout at the bottom end of Ecclesall Road, so if you can get down to the University roundabout then it's a 10 minute walk.

The volunteer work at the shelter is pretty heavy cleaning work, but if you have bus ticket costs then that will be covered and the other pay is a snuggle and play with the cats when all the daily cleaning is done, which makes up for all the hard work for most people.

If that's the sort of thing that you're considering then I'm sure they'd be happy to hear from you. They're on 272 4441 and they try to answer all calls between 1.30 and 3.30 daily. There is an interview process (for health and safety purposes and to rule out all of the people who think that volunteering just includes feeding and playing with the kittens) but when you call they will mail you out a volunteer pack and make an appointment for you to come in and talk to the wardens about what volunteering entails.

The Shelter runs on a small army of volunteers, so I'm sure that they'll be happy to see you if you decide that the Shelter is for you.

The council stray kennels in the centre, near to West Bar - I believe they take in volunteers, but you can't walk the dogs there. I believe that the Sheffield RSPCA down Attercliffe way also do. Sheffield Dog Rescue are at Mosobrough and they are often desperate for dog walkers.

Maybe think what it is you want to do - but thanks for offering, I hope that your help can be used, its just rubbish that there arent enough rescue places around because the sure do need people to help - just no actual centres.

Thanks everyone for all your help! I have been googling for ages and found none of these places - I did see the Sheffield Dog Rescue and I'd love to dog walk for them but it's a good eight miles away. (I haven't ruled it out completly though as google maps isn't always up to date so there might be a quicker bus route or something). The cats shelter sounds the perfect distance, and just seeing the cute cats let alone playing with them would be enough to make it worth it :) I'll also look into the kennels for the council and possibly the rspca although their website says they're not looking for volenteers right now.

:) thanks again everyone, I'll bookmark all the websites and contact them a little nearer the time, I just wanted to get ahead and know what sort of things might be available so had some sort of plan for the summer, and I didn't waste a couple of weeks doing this stuff then! (I'm super organised!)

Hi there,

Just as an aside, if you can't get to a dog rescue yourself, you may be able to tag along with us when we go over to Rain Rescue (I live in S10 so could easily take you with me!) and take the dogs for a walk.

Also, it's not volunteering for charity or anything, but if you wanted to spend time with some dogs, you are welcome to come along for a walk with us during your time off (I have two dalmatians) and even come along to our evening dog training classes in S10 if you like. We are always looking for people willing to come in and do some extra socialisation with the dogs in class!

I'm sure the staff at the pound would be very grateful for some more volunteers ;) It's mostly moving the dogs and cleaning in the morning, but usually plenty of time in the afternoon to play with the pooches :)

Hello, thank you for the offer that sounds great, I may well contact you nearer when I'm finished my exams if that's okay with you, it's very kind of you to offer to help :)

If its learning about animals you're interested in, I am happy for you to come over to me for the day and I can teach you about Guinea pigs?

I know this thread is getting on to nearly be a year old now, but I was wondering how you got on Parrot?

I'm a student in the city as well and I'd really like to get involved with animals and dog walking etc but travelling out of the city is often a bit of an issue (grr, money), and I was wondering if you managed to sort something out regarding travelling?

Also if anyone has any new suggestions that would be great :). I think I'll have to have a look at the cat rescue place too!

What animals are you interested in, that would be the best start :)
