Supertram line extensions? Sheffield to Rotherham?

Recommended Posts

Trolley buses still run on the road and add to and are delayed by congestion.

I always thought that it didn't run to the south of sheffield because people didn't want it there when the route was brought in

Not as much as the trams, because trolleybuses have auxiliary motors and can drive offwire (e.g. around obstacles); trams cannot!

Ive always said that the tram Must be extended from Herdings Park to Low Edges via Meadowhead , a massive park and ride could be built at Meadowhead with a bus interchange, people then have the option of buying a ticket to park their car and travel on either bus or tram into the city.

This would then hopfully ease the " Woodseats Traffic System " of traffic ( Snigger ) :hihi:

A quick look at a map shows Meadowhead to city centre via the ring road to Manor Top, then into town, is about twice as far as going through Woodseats. I wonder if many would really use it if were built. A link from Manor Top to join the existing line by the Arena might make better sense first.

South west Sheffield has an excellent rail link already that takes only 7-8 minutes from Dore to Sheffield centre. A tramway would be slower.

The train is cheaper than the bus, as well as much quicker. The drawbacks are that it's an hourly service, and the rail station isn't in the centre of town.

The train is busy. There were standing passengers on the 17.14 tonight - and about half the passengers left the train at Dore! There are 3 trains into town in the morning between 8 and 8.30, and all have standing passengers from Dore into town.

Yes but the tram was planned to stop near Millhouses Park & Ride ( A621 ) and then near Heeley Bridge ( A61 ) so this would give the option of people using the tram

People could go to the moon quicker then driving through Woodseats :hihi:

The tram in the old days ( pre October 1960 closure ) did go from the Manor down Prince Of Wales Road , you could have a Meadowhall - Lowedges service via Manor Top & Meadowhead , this would replace the long gone 2/59 outer circle bus service

But you were saying they were a better option than a mono rail, not than a tram...

Lets just get rid of the tram

If anything we should expand. They are much more reliable, run on time much more than the bus and carry more people.

It has been proven beyond doubt that the reliability is at the expense of all other road users. If a competent body could be found to arrange the expansion of the trams it should only be done to extensions that are "off road". Given the complete mess that was made of the original build SYPTE should not be involved.

True, for those living near the tramlines.

Who's going to pay for a massive new investment that helped only a small percentage of the population, wherever it would be expanded to?

F1fan may find Bernie Ecclestone's millions aren't available - or enough if they were!

It's not that small a percentage though is it, particularly when you think about how park and ride works.
