UK unemployment at 17 year high

Recommended Posts

the complication now, i think, is that there are now much larger factors to consider than, say, when thatcher was in power. the technology has changed, the world wide power structure is in flux, the financial situation(world wide) is also in flux. there can be no 'solution' in the UK without considering, in a real way, everything from Brazil, EU to 'fair trade' right through to the usual domestic issues.

am a communist by nature but am aware that won't work. yet capitalism is so obviously failing.

socialism seems a sort of ok 'middle ground' but even that's fallen flat on its ass.

maybe some new-age way of doing things is the answer.

Technology will always change. The fact is employers are putting ppprrrofit before people.

i agree with the essence of what you're saying. the problem is with your verve for blame. the 'capitalists' are just like everyone else you would want in your 'brotherhood of man' are they not. we are as much to blame for where we are as 'they' are.

but, yes, the pursuit of money for money's sake needs to be put down

I'm glad we broadly agree. And I accept what you say. We are none of us spotless in this. It isn't for me; about pontificating about how saintly I am I'm really not. But that is the point to me. I, even I can distinguish between someone whose instinct is to help and someone whose instinct is to exploit. I feel that this is, in the end what separates people. Those who feel empathy for people who suffer, and those who wish to lay blame at their feet. In the end I don’t believe that the powerless are responsible. I believe that those who profit most from chaos should foot the bill for its reparation.

they more or less always have. thing is now, especially in manufacturing, more and more they don't really need people. or, at least, not as many as they used to.

i think the answer still lies with considering what's happening beyond the borders as much as what's going on here.

i generally agree with you that there needs to be a re-alignment and redistribution of resources and wealth. worldwide, though, not just here and there. people do have the power. problem is the systems has become so vast and so intricate it has taken on the characteristics of a living organism. even its biggest players are now just as caught up in it as we are. the system itself now defends itself and grows, adapts and grows.

strange situations we've sleepwalked into.

True your analogy of an organism is an accurate one I feel. I also feel though that the earth itself and its ecological balance is an organism far more real and fundamental than this Frankenstein’s monster which overlays it. Mankind is adrift in a sea of distortion and corruption, and if history is anything to go by, it will take a jolt from the blue to awaken him.

Anyone who watches the news, (even the right wing media) cannot hope to avoid the avalanche of natural disasters and unrest happening across the globe. These are symptoms of dis-ease.

The balance of our lives of our minds and of the planet we all depend on, is disturbed. And we so removed from the direct correlation between nature and ourselves imagine that we are immune from its imperatives. We aren't. If we don’t respect the planet the delicate balance is gradually eroded. Weather systems begin to become erratic; food shortages begin to be a real problem. And in its slipstream comes the detachment of our sense of emotional wellbeing and mental health.

The statistics on mental ill health would make even the most callous flinch. These elements are not separate; they are intricately connected aspects of a system in crisis. Our politics our government our relationships all show the hallmark of delusion and exploitation inherent within a Capitalistic system.

I say not how can we afford to act, but how can we afford not to act in the face of this disintegration?

Where's your empathy for other people?

If a lion, a wolf and a lamb are deciding who to have for dinner, who do you feel is more deserving of empathy?

So you think that you are right and that most other people are wrong?

That indicates your delusion, not your empathy.

i hear you. my feeling and emphasis has always been on, as it's called, 'livity'. you live right and do right thing will fall into place. but, as you say, what's needed now is a jolt.

as you've said all the problems-climatic, economic, the increase in mental health disease and medication, the proliferation of viral and other diseases, apathy, war etc- all really stem from the same thing. and all, more or less, have similar solutions all leading back to one basic thing ie- do right by others and the planet.

of course, a change in being from what we've been for centuries is going to be tricky, but i think replacing one 'ism with another based on more or less the same assumptions would not fix the problem.

don't ask me what can be done, i don't know.

That suggests your delusion, not your empathy.

I don’t think most people are wrong. I think they subscribe to the status quo because they have been coerced into accepting slavery. Most people are so caught up in survival that reflection is no longer a "luxury" they can afford. They have been conned by Capitalism to equate freedom with material possessions. This is a lie. It is a very narcotic lie, but a lie none the less.

Freedom is within. I suggest that if this makes me delusional, I am happy to be thought so. I am in good company, Voltaire, Rousseau, Jefferson, Adams, Montesquieu, Sartre, Kierkegaard, Marx, Rogers, Masslow etc.

You know the saying goes:

“What profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul?”
