Something I saw in the Daily Mirror the other day about speed cameras, in

that you could easily avoid getting any points, but still pay the fine. I've

copied out the main story below........

 

"However, a friend of a friend who works in Swindon Magistrates Court

informs me that he's discovered something regarding the processing of

speeding fines. This procedure works nationwide. If you get a speeding

ticket or go through a red light and are about to get points on your

licence, there is a method to ensure that you don't.

 

If the fine is, say £40, make your cheque out for £41 or some small amount

over the fine. The system will then have to send you back a cheque for the

difference, but here is the trick. Don't cash the cheque. Throw it away.

 

Points are NOT put onto your licence until all the financial transactions

are complete. If you do not cash the cheque, the transactions are not

complete. However the system has got its money and is happy, and will not

bother you any more. This information came from a very reliable computer

company with knowledge of the standard database used by each county."

 

So basically you have nothing to loose (well apart from the £1 you over

spent).

Sounds like an old wives tale to me!

 

Assuming it does work, you would be in a difficult situation as you'd still have to declare the speeding offence to your insurance company - how do you explain the 'points' then? If you had an accident you'd quite possibly be uninsured if you don't do this correctly.

A quick google turns up the same article, but written for an American audience, allegedly it was information supplied by an "unnamed source" from the company who made the software....

it's a common story, i've never seen anything other than 3rd hand accounts of it working though.

 

Sometimes there are schemes where people speeding are offered alternatives to the normal fine/points.

That story has been going around for years. No idea if it's true or not.

 

As for declaring the offence/points - you only get asked if you have any endorsments on your licence - if they haven't been put on then there's nothing to declare is there.

Yup.

 

Usually if the livlihood of the driver would suffer severly in relation to the "crime" (ie clean licence needed for driving work etc.).

This isn't a uncommon as it sounds.Certain authorities will offer 1 day course in exchange for points but it may have to be your first offence

I don't know about it having to be your first offence but I know it's only if you're marginally over the limit (I will have a look but I think it's about 5-10mph over).

 

Also depends on your police area, I think it is/was only available in some areas as a pilot scheme but proved very successful with a reduced chance of reoffending... I think it's a pretty graphic thing.

Its an old tale I'm afraid - the DVLA will request you license at some point for endoresement if not produced in the first instance, or at the court hearing if you request one.

And how do you get your licence back? You send your licence off with your payment of the fine. Surely they aren't going to return it until the finacial transaction is complete.....catch 22.
