crazykaz   10 #1 Posted February 8, 2011 We are in the middle of moving house but the hosue we are moving to is not very child friendly. We want to pull out all the shrubs and trees that are in it and put a play area in for the kids where we can put a slide, swing etc. We do not want grass as under the swing area it can get worn away.  We have thought of either play bark or pea shingle but if anyone has any further suggestions that would be great.  Thanks
 Share this content via...
Plain Talker   11 #2 Posted February 8, 2011 <mod hat off>  There's the rubberised shredding stuff, as an alternative? Might give a softer/safer landing in the event of the littlies taking a tumble?
 Share this content via...
The Blonde   10 #3 Posted February 9, 2011 Be careful if you have the bark because it attracts cats who want somewhere to do their business!
 Share this content via...
Pauliedw   10 #4 Posted February 9, 2011 Agree that cats can be attracted to the bark.  on the other hand, it does look nice, and doesn't seem to get everywhere like pea shingles.  Would be worth putting up some sort of mini border around the covered area to separate from any remaining grass so that any strays won't damage your lawn-mower blades
 Share this content via...
diamondjack   10 #5 Posted February 12, 2011 we have got bark but would have preferred those large rubber squares you can buy - think they were at B&Q
 Share this content via...
willman   10 #6 Posted February 12, 2011 The issue with shredded rubber is that it is not environmentally friendly. It can't be taken (legally) to landfill,it also has issues with the water table. So when (if) you move house it can't realistically be uplifted.  We investigated its use as manege for the horses and came across all the above issues. Jumbo bags of bark ccan be obtained on ebay btw.
 Share this content via...
numero uno   10 #7 Posted February 13, 2011 If there are cats around and they want to they will dig in the pebbles or bark. We did this in sheffield and used bark it cost less than buying a slide/climbing frame combo and will last for years as opposed to those thin gauge metal framed things you buy. http://rb-building.com/index.php?mact=Album,m2,default,1&m2albumid=32&m2returnid=52&page=
 Share this content via...
Lux Lawns   10 #8 Posted February 15, 2011 (edited) Have you thought about artificial grass, its sounds like it would be an ideal solution for you.  It is hard wearing and will last well over 15 years. It's come on alot over the years and isn't like the old astroturf you see on football pitches its now really soft and realistic. You would be able to forget about mud and mess as a artificial grass remains clean and green whatever the weather and is virtually maintenance free.
