Yeh - was put on a tester and was showing fully charged.

When I unhooked the charger cables, the dashboard lights started to fade?

The only way we could get it started was if it was on the jump leads for 10 mins, all dashboard lights were lit, then roll it down the hill and jump it as the engine wouldn't turn over.

Although, when changing the battery the leads were tightened up as much as I could, but they could wiggle (if that makes sense).

So thinking I've bought a new battery for nothing as the old one was probably fine

I dunno if a garage would charge to look at it - just my other half has lost his job so money is quite tight at the moment.... :(

I have heard lots of good things about this Nick Thompson. Do you know the name of his garage?. Isit just VAG or all German cars. Looking for someone to look at my merc.

With it being a diesel it could need new glow plugs.

Nope, sounds like the battery isn't properly connected.

Potentially but all they do is help the diesel ignite for the engine to run. Its bizarre your lights, electrics radio ect aren't working but central locking is.

Does it continue to run after being Jumped?.

Sounds like bad connection from battery to car? Not good if terminals loose on battery, is it correct battery? Funny that dash lights up with jump leads from other car points again to bad connection, from your battery to car.what happens if you use the jump leads to connect your battery to your car leads do dash lights light up? This would prove a bad connection? I don't know if it would be safe to try and start the car like this ! But would be ok to turn to first click on key to see if lights up, your best bet is to call a mobile auto electrician to be safe, ask how much for a visit. If youre not sure dont play would be bad if you hurt yourself taking my or anybody's else's advice that's not a expert. Stay safe and take care!

Thanks bessmeg!

Terminals aren't loose on the battery - the connector things from the car to the battery can be wiggled. Yes it's the correct battery.

I wouldn't start the car like that but will try the jump lead thing tonight and see what it shows.... Do I just connect them to the battery and leave the other ends unconnected?

Take connectors off battery then connect jump lead to connector one end and other end of jump lead back to battery ensure connected up correct!repeat for other side , if your not sure do not play. Hopefully this will provide good connection between your battery and car leads using jump leads crocodiles see if dash lights on ,May prove you have bad connection? The only time I have seen a problem like this it turned out to be a bad connection to car body on other end of negative lead ie opposite to battery end, once again not sure don't play seek advice I am not a expert!!!!!! But I could safely try this make sure you can ! Advise you phone mobile auto electrician ( what ever you get sorted your connections to battery must be tight not "wiggle" so if you find out what problem is you must still sort this out)
