chimay   10 #4 Posted January 7, 2011 I don't have arthritis. I have been taking the vegetarian glucosamine for about 18 months and this winter for the first time in several years I've not had the painful knee joints I used to get every winter. biotechpete   10 #5 Posted January 7, 2011 According to a study recently published in the BMJ no it doesn't. The conclusion of the study was Compared with placebo, glucosamine, chondroitin, and their combination do not reduce joint pain or have an impact on narrowing of joint space. Health authorities and health insurers should not cover the costs of these preparations, and new prescriptions to patients who have not received treatment should be discouraged.  However, a publication on behalf of the Arthritis Research UK working group on complimentary and alternative medicines, concluded that among all the alternative therapies The present review found consistent evidence that capsaicin gel and S-adenosyl methionine were effective in the management of OA.  My personal caveat is that the efficacy of these 2 things is probably based mostly around the reduction of pain rather than improvement of the joint itself (I haven't been bothered to actually fully read the papers)
 Share this content via...

Dozy   11 #7 Posted January 7, 2011 When my dog developed arthritis, I took to giving her chews with glucosamine and other stuff in them, and there was definitely an improvement!!! When I switched to giving her glucosamine in her food, it continued to help her.
 Share this content via...

Rupert_Baehr   10 #10 Posted January 7, 2011 Glucosamine seems to work pretty well for the people who make it.  There's a bottle (which my wife bought) in our bathroom cabinet. It's been there for nearly 3 years and she hasn't complained of arthritis since she bought it.  It seems to keep away the elephants, too. GothicCharm   10 #11 Posted January 8, 2011 I take glucosamine..when i remember.. and when I remember my joints do feel better lol.  But my dog had really bad joints in his back legs and we put glucosamine in his food and he was like a puppy after he'd been eating that. Really worked for him.  As far as I know you're absolutely fine to take it with your other tablets.
 Share this content via...
Evei   10 #12 Posted January 8, 2011 Glucosamine works as well as a placebo does. It may work on your wellbeing (you feel you are being treated so you feel better about yourself, which is proven to make pain less) but for actually treating the symptoms it does nothing. It is the same for animals if you give your dog it you actively look for improvements so you believe it has worked.  If it did work doctors would prescribe it as it would be a lot cheaper than the drugs they do prescribe for arthritis
 Share this content via...
