They might not be feral kittens - their mother may have left the house to give birth and then got run over or have simply been inexperienced and abandoned them. My granny's cat had several litters which would vanish - she was taking the kittens out and hiding them (the cat, not my grandmother ;) ).

See if there is evidence of an adult cat around (mice and bird bones, :gag: ) or evidence of her nest. Young Kittens won't live very long without their mum, so either they are older than you think (from 8 weeks or so) or she is about or not long gone.

Either way, I'd try to trap them and get them used to being indoors and have them rehomed by one of the sanctuaries, as they won't last long out of doors. :( Keep feeding them, four or five times a day, moving food closer and closer to the house, and have a big box or basket ready to put them into as you catch them.

I am after a kitten if you want to find a good home for one of them.

Any idea how old they are?

If you want to find somewhere for all of them I am happy to help you catch them and take them to the RSPCA, after I've picked one that is!!

Good for you  I can only make it at the weekends and mostly walk the dogs but I love the cattery too, its such a shame they're struggling to afford the running costs :(

Get donating people!

Please be aware that the RSPCA in Sheffield has now closed for admissions. The closest RSPCA is now in Bawtry, but there are people in Sheffield that can help.

I would strongly advise not to try separating and homing these kittens until you know that they aren't really feral. Kittens who haven't had contact with humans are just as feral first generation as second or third. If they are feral they NEED each other at this point, and will need very specialist care in homes with confident cats to show them the ropes to get them to be anything other than feral. Friendly kittens are emotionally stable enough to be in a house of humans without other cats. This is not so for feral kittens. Forcing them into a situation without other cats is very likely to cause the little things to go into emotional breakdown.

Every day is critical here- the acknowledged point beyond which turning the kittens feral to friendly is difficult is 8 weeks. Please get CP or similar help to trap these kittens and get them specialist help.

Thanks for the advice medusa, but who is CP??

I have looked after 'feral' cats before, my mother looks after a gang of 5 or 6 stray cats and I agree it does take a long time to get their confidence, but the younger they are the easier it is.

Anyways, as I said, my better half and I are looking for a kitten (or maybe two) and would love to take them on and give them a loving home, anything to ensure they don't end up as strays and a general nuisance to all.

CP are Cats Protection. Sheffield CP have a really good history of trapping and homing (where possible) ferals, and spaying/neutering and releasing where not possible.

They have humane traps for cats who you can't walk up to and pick up, and they use foster homes to help get them socialised with humans.

We at the Shelter don't have the facilities or space to help many ferals (although we try our best) so we refer to the CP as they are the experts in this.

I think it's a bit early to assume these cats are true feral and that they need 8 weeks of 're-programming'. All I want to do is house a kitten or two, I've had cats all my life except for the last year or so and it's taken a bitch load of negotiating to get my landlord to allow it.

So if you reckon these wee chaps need a home f_g just let me know.

P.S I can get hold of a cat trap from Thornberry, they have loaned us one in the past so we could get a couple of strays neutered....oh and some great big thick industrial gloves!!
