Looking for relatives of my gt grandfather : wilfred damms

I will be speaking to Ma this weekend, I will try to find out whether she can remember the names of any of her aunts/uncles

in my Great War files i have 10 'Damms'.

 

Albert Edward Damms - served - 478136 RE

 

Alfred Damms - served - 22478 York & Lancs - 44 Worksop street, Attercliffe

 

Charles Damms - served - 50671 KOYLI

 

Harry Damms - served - 40582 West Riding Rgt - 45 Harold street

 

Richard Damms - served - 67848 4th KOYLI - 74 Fearnough street

 

William Oscar Damms - served - 38901 York & Lancs - 50 Wayland road

 

Wilfred Damms - killed - 202850 York & Lancs ( wElfred on Ancestry )

 

All the above have surviving service papers on Ancestry.

 

Lawrence Damms - killed - 49714 Liverpool Rgt

 

William Damms - killed - 28271 KOYLI

 

Walter Damms - served - KOYLI ? I have a copy of a photograph of Walter.

 

 

I also have these 'Damms' on various rolls of honour from around Sheffield.

 

Alf. Damms - Boot Dept. B & C CO-OP Society roll of honour. ( this is now at Grenoside crematorium )

 

J.H. Damms - RAF. Owlerton Methodist Church roll of honour

 

L. Damms - Heeley Christ Church roll of honour

 

William Henry Damms - His name appears on a provisional list of names that were to be entered on to the 'lost' roll of honour for St Michaels and All Angels at Neepsend.

 

William Damms - His name appears in de Ruvigny's roll of honour, here with his entry -

"Private, No. 28271, 12th (service) Battn. The Kings Own ( Yorkshire Light Infantry ), son of ( - ) by his wife Lilly: born Sheffield, educated there, enlisted on 11th April 1916, served with the Expeditionary Force in France, and was reported missing 11 April 1917, and is now assumed to have been killed in action on that date. He married at Sheffield in 1912, Mary Annice, ( 8/2 Osborne street, Pitsmoor ) daughter of Rolly Beresford".

It was Verdon George S. Damms (1916-1999). He graduated in medicine from Sheffield University in 1940; his father Walter was also a Sheffield GP. In case it's helpful, here is a list of people with the surname Damms from the 1925 Sheffield directory:

He was the oldest of 7 his brothers and sisters was called Walter born1894, Lillian born 1897, Arnold born 1899 ,nellie born 1902 ,edith born 1905 & winifred ada born 1910 Thanks

 

Hi Charleywoo,

 

Having talked to my mother today it appears she did have uncles and aunts all named above with exceptions, (Wilfred for obvious reasons), and Arnold being her father,

 

She was named Ada after her grandmother.

I have been trying to research the life of Charles Arthur Damms who emigrated to the USA.

 

I have the following 1891 CENSUS details before he went into the army

 

John Damms 44yrs Saw & Jobbing Grinder

Mary A Damms 44yrs Wife

*Charles A Damms 17yrs Bicycle Tyre Filer

Thomas Damms 13yrs Iron Hardener

Frances E Damms 11yrs Scholar

Ernest Damms 9yrs Scholar

Ada Damms 7yrs Scholar

Living at 120 Grammar Street

 

If you do come across any further details about Charles Arthur Damms I'd appreciate a PM.

Just come across your post on John and Mary Damms of Grammer St on 1891 census. They had an elder daughter, Clara Ann who married William Henry Crookes. They were my great grandparents. Would be interested in exchanging details.

My old mate Jack Damms [plasterer also ex royal navy] lived on Walkley St his wife's name is Jean and he had a daughter called Jacqueline and a son called Raymond.

A scholar and a gentleman was Jack.

Wonder if this is my step grandfathers ( Walter Damms )  brother.  Did Wilfred marry  Lily Pass?
