rossyrooney   12 #2 Posted December 27, 2010 If you walk towards the hospitals from West Bar roundabout you'll find it on your right after the new Velocity building and by the side of the BMW showrooms.
 Share this content via...
ROLLESTONE Â Â 10 #3 Posted December 27, 2010 If your grandparent was a Roman Catholic the church will probably be St Vincent's which is in White Croft which is near to Hollis Croft. If they were not Catholic it would most likely to be St Luke's which was on the corner of Solly Street and Garden Street.
 Share this content via...
hillsbro   27 #4 Posted December 27, 2010 ... If they were not Catholic it would most likely to be St Luke's which was on the corner of Solly Street and Garden Street. That's right - St Luke's closed in 1938 and the building was demolished in the post-war period. It was known as "St Luke's, Hollis Croft" with this referring to the district, rather than the actual street. That area, known as "The Crofts", was densely populated 100+ years ago, and the church would have been well attended. The area had large numbers of people of Irish and Italian origin, hence the Roman Catholic church on Solly Street. Here is a photo of the interior of St Luke's. The stained glass window behind the altar was evidently removed and transferred to the Cathedral.
 Share this content via...
