Tram - Purple Route

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know why the purple route has been suspended for 2 days now, when the blue and yellow route have continued? I'm really relying on the purple route to get to work tomorrow so I don't end up using all my holidays for snow. Buses not running up here and Gleadless Townend is too far (particularly considering I may have a decent walk the other end).

I walked to/from the Gleadless Townend tram stop to New Inn near the Norton Water Tower last night, the tracks from Leighton Road to Herdings Park are still covered in about 2 foot of snow, as a fellow poster has said there is also staff issues as well

I was up there this morning and there was about 10 Supertram guys clearing the tracks and platforms, also slowly running a tram along the lines. Slowly but surely, they were edging the tram up the tracks towards the very end (I've taken photos) using it to push through the snow, but it was solid where the footpaths cross the line so this was taking time to clear by manpower alone. At the actual terminus, the snow was up to the doors of the tram itself.

Some great pictures there :D

You would have thought that SYS would have some sort of snowplow for the trams that they could fit on the front

They've never had much need for them before. Plus I would imagine that they'd be bespoke and expensive to buy if they are only going to be bought on a 'just in case' basis.

Now I see why it's not been running - lol! Hopefully it will all be clear by Monday, getting cabin fever now.

So theve had a tram up there then for test , suspect the origional reason was lack of staff but then when you dont run you allow the snow/ice to build up.

Would be intresting to know if they have been running the ghost service this year and if so as it been doing herdings park.

(The ghost service runs after the usual trams have stopped it does all lines to ensure that snow doesnt build up and the overhead is kept freed of ice)

The purple route is back on according to the supertram website, running on the hour at Herdings Park and half past the hour at Cathedral

I'm struggling to get to work also because it's so hard to walk in the snow. I'm 21 weeks pregnant now and it is pretty scary walking at the moment. My husband went on the tram this morning to get the car, which he had to abandon near B&Q on Queens Road when he got stuck the other day and he said two just passed him as they were too full before he finally managed to squeeze on the third one to come along. Hope things are a bit better by monday.

Yup :hihi:

It was quite spooky because as it came through the snow it didn't make any noise at all.
