royb121   10 #1 Posted December 2, 2010 I live in a student house and we have a basic (crap) washing machine. Recently the washing machine has filled up with dirty water. Originally we thought it was the pipe outside leading into the drain but we checked and unblocked anything blocking the drain. However the dirty water is still there  Any suggestions? We have already rang the landlord and he said he will "sort it" but that normally takes 3 weeks for him to even consider sorting it and anyone he sends out I imagine will struggle to get here with the snow... rubydazzler   11 #2 Posted December 2, 2010 Have you checked the filter? It's usually a sock or even money that some careless person didn't take out of their pockets first.  If you don't know what the filter is, ring your mum and ask her. rubydazzler   11 #6 Posted December 2, 2010 hmm that sounds like the most likely fix! Whereabouts is the filter?Don't you have the instruction book? If not follow what Set in Stone says and have a look at the front of the machine for it. If you can get the door open hold a bucket in front to catch the excess water, and then bale out as much of the rest as you can. Then open the trap. Make sure you put plenty of towels down to catch the water from the trap when it comes out.  I bet that's your problem, it usually is! royb121 Â Â 10 #7 Posted December 2, 2010 Just reporting back. Did exactly what you both said. Pulled out the washing machine, tilted it back to look underneath. Eventually figured out which part was the filter (black rubber tube thing). Scraped everything out including a pound coin and an old Shef uni card and rinsed out all the yellow goo. And now it seems to be working fine! Â Thankyou very much for your quick and helpful replies! You saved me going into work smelling like a farm
 Share this content via...

Corbyn   10 #11 Posted December 9, 2010 Any ideas what would be causing a fairly new washing machine to leave fluff/fibres on things? We have wiped out the inside of the machine and even though it has a so-called self cleaning filter we have also had that out and cleaned it, though it wasn't really dirty.  It is still under warranty but it takes them ages to come so just trying to sort it ourselves if poss.  Thanks in advance for any advice.
