Shefftax bought Abbey and moved it down to Bedford Street. I think they still use the name and phone number but its all black cabs no private hire cars.

Norman died earlier this year.

I still work with a couple of cab drivers who were on original Abbey like Alan Hogg and Bill Green. I still see Ken (62) and Jack Heath knockin about.

I worked at Abbey on Rutland Road for 16 years.

I used to run Bedford Street Taxi,s which was basically a continuation of Tomlinson,s when they closed down the taxi side, after 18months i sold and moved to the east coast,Shefftax moved in later. Any of the original Bedford Street Taxi,s drivers still around? I started "cabbing" in 1964 there were no "private hire" in those days. good memories though!

Norman Hattersley was the one who introduced private hire cars to Sheffield working with a two way radio system from his living room on Pexton Road sometime in the 60's.
