chefkicker   11 #53 Posted December 8, 2010 MIXED MARTIAL ARTS:  There were two MMA Fights on the card.  Michael Gabbitas (Kapap) Vs Alex Keane (TFS)  Michael took the fight to a very game Alex who after taking a few punches decided to take the fight ot the ground. Michael being a Blue Belt in BJJ was able to handle himself on the floor as well as standing up. Both fighters gave their all but the decision was a unanimous one to Michael Gabbitas.  Kaz Khan (AFK) Vs Paul Dryhurst (Springs Taekwondo)  This fight was an unusual as Kaz Khan , who is AFK's newest member of the Fight Squad is a kickboxer while Paul is a Taekwondo instructor. Paul asked for a fight within 4 weeks of the show date and Kaz was the closest to Paul's weight. I simply asked Kaz if he fancied having a fight, and he said yes! Kaz had done a bit of grappling before with Brian Aiken and for this fight took a crash course with Jacob Constantinou and also did bits with AFK's Sajad Baroo.  This fight between two stand up styles didnt stay standing for long. Kaz threw a low kick then went straight for the clinch. He lifted Paul and then slammed him to the canvas. Paul got a choke on immediately and just held on tight. Kaz managed to work himself out of the choke and put on an armbar causing Paul to tap out in the 1st round. Winner = Kaz Khan by Armbar. Thanks for Kaz's grappling are due to Jacob, Brian ,Saj and also the mysterious training partner known only as "The Tiger!"  Epilogue to this fight. The very well respected Taekwondo instructor Andy Hill recommended Paul to do Kickboxing at AFK. Andy Hill if you are reading this, respect to you sir! chefkicker   11 #54 Posted December 8, 2010 Back to the kickboxing bouts:  James Power (AFK) Vs Josh Crow (Micks Freestyle) Josh started busier landing punches at a high workrate and pressuring James on the ropes. James came back with solid single shots and powerful inside leg kicks. Josh's power started to fade in the last round and allowed James a little more room. Both young novices fought their hearts out and were given a well deserved DRAW  Michelle Page (Gainsborough) Vs Gemma Whelan (London) This fight was a real crowd pleaser, both girls being good friends of myself and both gyms having excellent relationship with AFK. Michelle came forwards landing powerful punches while the southpaw Gemma used her characteristic "Nemesis" fighting style. Gemma as is normal from the Nemesis gym made things extra awkward and scored well with kicks from all angles. Michelle did not let this faze her and kept battling away attempting to fight toe to toe.  On this occasion the decsion went to Gemma's kicking and evasion. Winner = Gemma Whelan. chefkicker   11 #55 Posted December 8, 2010 Chris Lawson (Micks Freestyle ) Vs Karl Johnston (Jesters gym) This was a classic battle of the veteran (Chris) against the up and coming youngster (Karl). Both of them from Full Contact backgrounds (Kicks above waist system) having their first fight under Kickboxing rules (low kicks). Chris took the fight to the taller Karl and chose to go toe to toe. The fight seemed fairly even with both contestants showing a good exchange of skills. Chris put on an excellent display of kicking combinations which always seemed to include spinning kicks. In the last round however, Karl's youth and stamina shone through as Chris Lawson started to tire.  Winner Karl Johnston (Jesters)
 Share this content via...
chefkicker   11 #56 Posted December 8, 2010 (edited) Andrew Campsill (AFK) Vs Sam Bagoly (Nemesis) This fight was straight out of a Rocky Movie !!!  Commited Christian Andrew Campsill was the next up from AFK. The interesting thing about this bout is that in his debut fight, Andrew took on another Nemesis fighter (at 3 days notice). Excellent relationships exist between both camps as we both always support each other. Sam being southpaw just like his team mate Gemma, scored on Andrew from a distance with kicks both low and high and also with flying knees! Andrew attempted to get in close to box with his fast moving opponent but was met with the push kick each time. Coming into the 2nd round Sam continued to land shots including a few powerful left crosses and a solid high kick. Andrew eventually found his range and stepped up a gear. Towards the end of the round Andrew pushed forwards with punch and kick combinations against his taller opponent. In the last round Andrew came back stronger than ever! He pressured Sam for the whole of the round scoring a knockdown from punch combinations which ensured him the win. Winner = Andrew Campsill (AFK)  Andrew and Sam are still friends after this fight (althought they have requested a rematch which will have to happen in London) Edited December 8, 2010 by chefkicker
 Share this content via...
rhiannakick1 Â Â 10 #57 Posted December 16, 2010 If your wanting a good saturday night out having watched the previous 3 shows, I dont think there is a better evening of entertainment&action. The best local fighters are all on the card AND fighters from all over (one was flown from Ireland to fight a Sheffield AFK fighter for a title!!) Congrats go out to Farhad who is really the only person (Muay Thai/K-1) that puts regular shows on AND ALWAYS FILLS THE ARENA (alot try and alot fail).. Alot slag his shows off but the facts speak for themselves.. Exciting action, value for money, fair matchmaking&a friendly atmosphere (iv been to some shows elsewhere were this is not the case!!) Looking forward to the next AFK night?... APSO ****ING LUTELY!!!!
 Share this content via...
rhiannakick1   10 #58 Posted December 16, 2010 Jacob Constantinou-First time iv actually seen him fight. Came forward well, strong technique. Looks in very good physical condition.  James Power-mature beyond his years, good showing, good balance. Can&will only get better.  Kaz Khan. GREAT debut fighting for the 1st time against Paul Dryhurst who was much more experienced. With Kaz's Cobra like skills he was a pleasure to watch  Ant Stutchbury-Top fight from Superman, dominated from start to finish, he kicks hard AND PUNCHES LIKE A TRAIN!!!!  Andy Campsill-Good solid fighter with a great technique, proved in this fight (what we already knew) that he's got a good chin & will not back down from a tear up.  Yousif 'Coolest' Ibrahim-The most talented fighter out of the AFK gym (in my opinion). Talent, flair, ability. Lost to a VERY tough fighter but still stood toe toe with him in wot i thought was the best fight of the evening.   Also have to give a mention to Karl Johnson who fights out of Dale Woods stable who looked awesome and strong. He should be fighting on another AFK show.
 Share this content via...

He has had MMA fights before but that was his first kickboxing contest. Theres still a lot of rough edges to polish but there is still a lot of potential there.  Just think what James will be like once hes a bit older and put a bit of muscle on and perhaps trimmed down to 75kg? You should have seen him at Thanapron's interclub! He performed really well and took 2 fights on the day.
 Share this content via...
