Setting up a Micro Brewery - help and advice needed

Recommended Posts

Our first beer `Tiller Girl` is now available at The Huntsman, Thurlstone, near Penistone. (check opening times.) From Thursday 18th August there is a beer festival at The Fat Cat, Alma St Sheffield which will feature two of our beers, Bowhauler and Tiller Girl. Also Tiller Girl will be on at The Scarbrough Arms, Tickhill, near Maltby. For brief descriptions of our beers you can now visit our website: http://[email protected]. It is strange to write this after looking back at my previous postings. We have finally made a start.

Good luck with the business, but you really need to update your thread with the correct web address.

Seriously think you need to rethink the names for the beers.

:D

firstly I must correct our website address. It is http://www.geevesbrewery.co.uk. I read your link with interest. We have picked a narrowboat theme as we have lived on one as a family for many years, still have one, have done the length and breadth of the country in it and first brewed beer on it. So our beers are all named after narrow boating themes. If we wanted to get onto the worst beer clip names (which is not a bad idea ) how about Stern Gland Greaser. Yep, Pete went on a course for that when he was learning about narrowboat engines..

Maybe a personal point of view but I find the names convey nothing to me about the beer and some of the pump clips are positively off putting - the Bow Hauler makes me think I'm going to get something that smells of sweat. Seriously think you need to push the Geeves brand more rather than a "theme" eg look at Bradfield and Acorn as two good local examples. Also can't make up my mind if you're using Barnsley to sell the beer - in which case it needs to be more prominent IMHO, or you may as well leave it off altogether.

And I find the term "craft brewed" as awful as when I see "pan fried" on a menu.

Think my colleagues and I will have to change our Friday afternoon post-week pint from the Nelson to the Huntsman...

We really respect where you are coming from. Food for thought. More later. Any other thoughts ? Also what does IMHO mean ?

Also what does IMHO mean ?

Firstly IMHO means 'In My Honest Opinion.'

R.E. Longcol.

Secondly, I disagree with your point about beer names.

If I were to go along with your view on beer names then nobody would ever have bought Bishops Finger, Everards Tiger or Fox's Nob. (All popular brands that started local and are now very popular nationwide)

So that point really doesn't stand up.

I have kept close eye on this thread and applaud the passion of the OP.

Firstly, they have started something from scratch, Secondly, they have passion for the project, and lastly they have backed it up by following it through by getting the final product into one of the pubs on the 'Real Ale Trail'

Well Done to all concerned.

P.S. Like the little website too.

OUR BIG LAUNCH...The Huntsman,Thurlstone, near Penistone. Saturday evening 17th September. Geeves Brewery beers will be on and we are planning to have food and music. We can all meet each other finally. Sheffieldites on this site could even get together for taxis? I am disappointed that it is in the middle of nowhere for alot of us. (apologies to Thurlstone which is the centre of the universe to many) There is Geeves Brewery beer available in Sheffield though. We had Tiller Girl and Bow Hauler on at The Fat Cat which has been holding a Beer Festival and our beers were the FIRST BEERS to sell out.!!!!! So although people wanted to sup the new kid on the block, they blinking well kept coming back for more I presume.!! The Fat Cat`s cellar is so full that we have had to make way for other beers during this festival time. But we should be on at The Harlequin and The Shakespeare in the next week to 10 days. We deliver our beers on Wednesday. PS. You lifted our spirits Sheffandy.!!! Want to see you there !!
