It was a hospital that specialised in mental health, maybe your relative needed a bit of psychiatric care.

Legally records only have to be kept for 25 years after discharge or death then they can be destroyed, they maybe a chance the records are on micro film somewhere

There are records going back further than that for Middlewood hospital(some back to the 1940s).

The Sheffield Archives have a list of records but permission has to be requested from the appropriate body for archives staff to search them for the enquirer.

There is a charge for the archivists time.

Sheffield Archives will supply all relevant details on who to request permission from.

There were voluntary patients also.

The place was still scary before they knocked it down. A few friends and I used to walk across there to get to my friends house on Dykeshall. I remember all the documents and patient reports were still left behind. Naturally we read a few of them, one of my friends even took a few, very disturbing. Stories of patients attacking staff, patients attacking patients etc.

Most of my family worked there late 60's early 70's. My brother Bob Swann, Julie Trigg his first wife. My 1st wife Julie was in occy therapy, my mother Anne Swann was nurse escort. I spent many happy hours in the club when on leave and made many friends, Jack Sherrat, Ian franklin, Lynne Staniforth (now in Oz) and daughter of Ron Staniforth the Wednesday Player and big Bob Chiglow. Ron French the Administrator was a family friend. I wrote many letters whilst in the navy to Sir Arthur Jenkins and little Horace Buttons. Happy days.

 

I remember Jack Sherrat! I was a student nurse there from October 1978, my name then was Jill Garside. Does anyone remember me or Sean Cullen, Pauline Wainer, Gill Ward, Jayne Breeze??

I had a friend, Phillip Booth, his parents lived in the gate house to MWH. Knew him 1952 to 1957 when we were both at Woodhouse Grammar School. He now lives in Lincolnshire, in a small village nor far from Louth.

Also does anyone know of a Leonard Marshall, my grandfathers brother. He was at MWH, and possibly died there. I remember him visiting us on occasional Saturdays in the late 1940's. Think he was admitted to MWH due to a nervous breakdown when his wife died. He would have been born around 1890 (ish) in the Hollinsend area. Never been able to find our what eventually happened to "Uncle Len"

Yes I remember. I was a student nurse at the time and my girlfriend was very fond of the man that did it. Seemed utterly and completely out of character. It was a great shock to everybody as the victim was well known to many people who worked at Middlewood. Would have been 1978 I guess

Why are there two threads: Middlewood Hospital and the Old Middlewood Hospital? Aren't they one and the same? I've already placed my thoughts on the other thread concerning my experiences as a patient in the late 60s. I document them in my recently published book. In the admission ward, I encountered a military camp type atmosphere, no-sitting on beds, make your bed until the orderlies gave it their seal of approval, I was threatened and bullied by another inmate (sorry, "patient") when I stopped supplying him with cigarettes, and I saw that same yob beat up another physically challenged patient while the men in white stood and watched in amusement.

 

I recognize that staff who worked in mental hospitals have nostalgic memories to share. My wife nursed in one such facility here in Canada for most of her career. But, let's not forget the patients' experiences and the need to give more resources (here in Canada as well) to the proper treatment of mental illnesses.

 

Perhaps that ward I was on was atypical of the rest of MH. I hope so.
