The old Middlewood Hospital history/records etc

I have just found out that my great grandfather, Tom Hinchliffe, died in what I think was Middlewood Hospital in 1928.

His death certicate says South Yorkshire Mental Hospital, Wadsley, Ecclesfield R.D. However is cause of death is given as Fatty Degeneration of the Heart (2 years).

Does this sound like I have the right place and if so can anyone tell me how I would be able to access his hospital records.

Many thanks

Hiya kazindahouse, you may be able to access the records at

the sheffield archives on shoreham street

I did my mental handicap nurse training from 1975 to 1978. My tutor was Brian Hodges. Anyone out there remember them? Maureen

Hi Herries,

I wonder if you remember my cousin David Riley who was in Middlewood hospital at the time you worked there. How do I go about accessing his notes?

Most of my family worked there late 60's early 70's. My brother Bob Swann, Julie Trigg his first wife. My 1st wife Julie was in occy therapy, my mother Anne Swann was nurse escort. I spent many happy hours in the club when on leave and made many friends, Jack Sherrat, Ian franklin, Lynne Staniforth (now in Oz) and daughter of Ron Staniforth the Wednesday Player and big Bob Chiglow. Ron French the Administrator was a family friend. I wrote many letters whilst in the navy to Sir Arthur Jenkins and little Horace Buttons. Happy days.

Hi anyone remember john and Sylvia Mitchell. If so let me know and I'll let them know. John is nearly blind and Sylvia still works at the new madhouse Forest Lodge.

Oh some might remember me to, the little blonde hair chap called Darren Mitchell who was always on the wards causing bother.

Hi, my Dad died last year and i miss him so much. He actually spent time in Middlewood hospital and i feel it scarred him for life. He had a mental breakdown and had to have electric shock treatment. He hated people knowing and was ashamed. Mental illness is still something of a hushed subject but a bit more open now. Does someone have to be dead for a certain length of time before you can see records? It would i think help me to know him more if i could find something out about his time there.

hi, just browsed the forum and noticed my mothers name kitty turner, me being her son i can tell you she was a cleaner and not a sister or so she told me lol, and as a youth always remembered her in my early years at middlewood. she still lives on winn gardens and again looking at some of the postings my wife jacqui remembers some of the names that have cropped up as she was a care worker at the time on eastgate and knows quite a few people patients and workers...

PS..MY WIFE HAS A COPY OF THE HISTORY OF MIDDLEWOOD HOSP... 1872-1972 by F.T THORPE

Hi---I trained as a Psychriatric nurse at Middlewood hospital, and was there from 1958--1975.When I left to come to Canada,I was a chargenurse. I have a copy of the 1973 centennial handbook of the history of Middlewood hospital, photos etc.It was sad to learn that the hospital was no longer there. My parents also worked there from 1927 until they retired,as chargenurse and sister respectively. My name is Mike Turner,in case anybody remembers me,and I now live in Edmonton,Alberta,Canada.I recently retired here as a senior nursing officer. It amazes me to learn that Kingswood block has been converted into luxury apartments, and called Kingswood Hall.I was night chargenurse of that block in 1973 and 1974.Its a wonder the building isnt haunted with all the people who lived there since 1873.

Hi my name is Lee and most of my family also worked at Middlewood. I am hoping you may remember my Grand father John Wilkin. I recently visited the site to see what is left. I have happy memories from my child hood playing in the grounds and visiting my grand father at work, unfortunately there is very little left and the clock tower has been much neglected. This is where my grand father’s office was located

I am researching my family tree and have found a relative that was an inmate in Wadsley Asylum. After she got out she lived with her nurse for 2 years and then suddenly killed her by hitting her with a hammer and cutting her throat!.... The murderer was called Rose Artliff and the victim Nurse Ada Bradley. All this happened in 1923 and I have now hit a brick wall, including where Rose's 4 children went to after her imprisonment.Any info anyone?
