stpetre   12 #37 Posted July 4, 2016 I met an older guy in there one night who was from the Noble Organisation of Gateshead and he said he owned Baileys and a slot machine business. People were full of it in those days! Looking online seems the Bailey Organisation was from Stockton some 40 miles south of Newcastle. I wonder if they were connected?  I remember the go go dancers in cages and a Caribbean girl dancer called Dawn. When they put the new carpet down the smell from fags stubbed out on it was dreadful!  Perhaps I was mistaken in saying that the Bailey Organistaion were from Newcastle, but they were from the north east, where Stockton on Tees is. Â Whoever owned it is not as important as that Sheffield grew up when the Cavendish opened. Other major Cities had nightclubs for years before the teetotal Sheffield City fathers on the licensing board would allow nightclubs in Sheffield to open. You had to go to a Chinese restaurant if you wanted to continue drinking after closing time, before 1967 in Sheffield ,or nip over to Manchester. You could get lucky outside the City if you were well in with a landlord for "after bird".
 Share this content via...

old tup   30 #43 Posted February 2, 2018 My Cavendish visits nearly got me divorced, every Friday night I went out with my old mates down town, before setting off I promised the bride that I wouldn,t go with the lads to the Cavendish after closing time!.Without fail I broke my promise arriving home at all hours not falling about but definitely under the influence, peer pressure and my weak resolve winning every time, the best part was I had to be up for work Saturday morning at 5am!.I don,t know how I did it but I never knocked once, arriving home after work the arguments were epic,it was all my fault and looking back I feel ashamed of my behaviour,I was immature and selfish!.Putting that aside in the early 60s pubs closed at 10pm so we had after bird favourites the Locarno had a bar upstairs open until 1am and Saturday nights we all took the wives and girlfriends to Roger Eyres otherwise known as the Ladybower Inn,I don,t think Roger had a watch,he was open all hours but only if he knew you!.He was a famous character who has been written about on the Forum before he was a bit of a lad alright!,it was over 50yrs ago how time flies!
