Bulgarian   10 #37 Posted January 17, 2011 This is one of the reasons local shops can't compete - many people cannot get to them when they are open and so go to the supermarket in the evening which is still open.  But why don't the local shops just stay open a bit later, perhaps opening at 10 and staying open till 6:30 ?  Everyone is constantly going on about supporting local shops, but TBH they don't deserve your support when they arn't actually providing you with anything. Greengeek   10 #38 Posted January 17, 2011 Totally agree, but please not another Tesco  A supermarkets a supermarket, whether they are blue, yellow, orange or red. Stop being so snobby. In Crookes we have a Co-Op and a Sainsburys slap bang next door to each other, with neither sign of either going out of business. We also have TWO butchers, and a great veg shop. Neither are looking to close. Maybe it will do the area good if the Spar closes, something useful can open in its place.  Threshers didn't seem to struggle, by Spar selling alcohol? It was the chain that went under/bought out.
 Share this content via...
tallanddopey   10 #39 Posted January 17, 2011 i think crosspool deffinately needs something that the kids dont own at lunchtime, as nearly every shop caters for the schools as that is where they will make quite a bit of money.  but as has been said that site is stupid for anything that requires parking. the junction is bad enough allready, especially in the morning when the amount of cares can sometimes bring crosspool to a standstill.  since ember inns took over the sportsman (and sent it spiraling downhill) they should build a new store there, plenty of space and parking. Frazer1974 Â Â 16 #41 Posted January 17, 2011 With the obvious exception of the way some of them treat suppliers, what's so bad about supermarkets? Â Most of us have pensions. They have investment funds which buy shares in FTSE firms. You don't complain when you get your annual pension statement telling you how much your pension has gone up because you're sharing in the profits. People aren't so bothered when it's good for them, but at a basic level we're all too eager to have a pop at Tesco, Shell, BP or whoever. Â People need to examine the whole picture, and realise that supermarkets are a fact of life, and if a majority of people didn't like them, they would go out of business.
