Memories of Sheffield City Hall

Recommended Posts

Inessex.

No it wasn't 1962. I think it was 1963/1964. The stones were not on that bill. Top of the bill was Chuck Berry and second were The Animals. I can't remember who else was on.

I was on the front row for this concert, '64 I think. The rest of the bill was Carl Perkins, The Nashville Teens (replacements for The Swinging Blue Jeans) and Kingsize Taylor & the Dominoes. A great show!

Went to a few of those. Thing was in those days it was so cheap to see bands at the city hall from memory it cost me no more than a £1 to see the likes of Genesis,Deep Purple etc etc. If you were bored you looked in The Star to see who was on and wandered down there with your mates to try and get a ticket. Again from memory Groundhogs and king Crimson cost 60p on the door. Happy days.

That's one I'd forgotten about! You're right about the prices. I can't swear to it,but I seem to remember paying 75p to see Led Zeppelin. Mind you they were rubbish-Bob Plant had laryngitis!

I got roped in as a roadie for 'Flintlock' (remember them?!) in the mid 70s when they played the CH. My mate and I then used the back stage passes a few weeks later and breezed through security to sit in the dressing room with Lynyrd Skynyrd who had a good laugh about it!. Saw some fantastic bands in the 70s, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, T Rex, Quo, Lou Reed, and many more. Also remember being part of the inter -department store 'It's a knockout' in the downstairs ballroom (I worked at Walsh's at the time) Great days.

That's another one! The seats in the stalls looked like a bulldozer had run through them after the gig.

I've thought of a couple more:-

Boomtown Rats

Wishbone Ash

And comedy gigs:-

Billy Conelly

Eddie Izzard

Ross Noble

Jimmy Carr

Does anyone remember "Wally"? Legend was that he was the guy who worked the house lights and the crowd always yelled WALLY!!! to get the house lights turned down to get the band on.

I'd be about 17 when Mott the Hoople were supported by Wishbone Ash..It was Promoted by 'The Hull Brick Company ' ( if anybody remembers 'em ) ...i'd been to Hull City Hall a few times, met the owners ,and was on 1st name terms with 'em .

On the night of the 'Concert' ( they weren't called Gigs in those days ) me and a mate were waiting outside the City Hall and a queue was building up ..We were near the front an' i spotted the Brick Co owners walking inside the main entrance .I banged on the Glass door an' they recognised me an' pointed to the side entrance .We were taken inside an' treated to seeing The 5 members of Mott the Hoople alongside the 4 of Wishbone Ash all on stage together , they'd turned their 'Sound Checks ' into a 9 man jam session...absolutely Brilliant !! (That was over 40 years ago an' it was a sight to behold ..Ian Hunter & Mick Ralphs alongside Andy Powell & Ted Turner)..i think they enjoyed it as much as us two did...:hihi:

hiya the last time i went to the city hall was to see doris stokes the medium the time before when i went to see her our seats were nearer the back than the front, anyhow i knew a temp security man and i asked him to get me some seats when doris stokes came again which he did, it was in 1987 september, she had to cancel that show until december, she was ill again the next date was march 10th 1988 my 50th birthday when we were getting ready to go i said to our party i'm expecting something to happen tonight it being my 50th birthday and i wasn't disappointed, it was a lot different when i went to se frankie laine in the 1950s.

One memory of the City hall ballroom was the annual awards for the council employees safe driving awards, apprenticeships etc on this one occasion councilor Dave Blunkett presented the awards accompanied with TEDDY his dog at that time after the speeches everyone moved to the bar areas one for staff (free bar) the other for the workers for some reason mr Blunkett found himself in the workers bar leaning up against one of the pillars which encircled the room by coincident it was one of my work colleagues wedding anniversary around 12 to 14 people were sat around a table my work mate had purchased a bottle of champagne which he opened with the cork flying in the direction of mr Blunkett hitting the stone pillar at the side of his head Teddy coward as though he had been shot one member of the party shouted as quick as a flash "BE CAREFULL WITH THAT YOU COULD HAVE SOMEONES EYE OUT" needless to say it was wet yourself laughing time as mr Blunkett was not one of the most popular people to those present in our party he was then escorted to the free bar where i suppose he got blind drunk.
