Date of birth 13th June 1951.

 

Father was/is Ernest Albert Thompson a.k.a "Porky"

 

Mother was Doreen Thompson.

 

I'm looking for him as he is my father.

Can anyone remember Henry (Harry) Bunker, who worked at Treeton in the 1960's, and most of the other pits in the South Yorkshire coalfield until he retired in or about 1985 ish. He was my Dad.

I worked at Treeton Colliery from 1950 to 1955 and I remember many of the men who worked there at this time as follows.Billy Nichols,Training Officer,Lou Harper,Undermanager of the Barnsley Seam.Harold Manship,Safety Officer.Louis Thomas Unit Surveyor.Tony Strickland,Surveyors Office.Fred Higgingbottom (Young Vulcan,wrestler) Blacksmith.Dick Haywood.Pit Bath Attendent and his son Eric who worked underground.Percy Beech,in charge of all underground conveyors.Tom Shinwell worked underground with the bricklayer,was a prisoner of war in Japanes hands.Slasher,collier E Wall,won the Military Medal during the second world war.My memories of my time there are good memories.

Frank Allen the last time I saw him still lived on WEST PARK DRIVE at Swallownest I think he is stillthere as I saw is Son walking thta way about 6 months ago,try 192.COM I think his wife is called Glenis?

The last I heard he was at ARMTHORPE in Doncaster but that was over 15 years ago

An old friend of mine who I have not seen in over 50 years worked there late 50's early 60's. He worked as a clerk if I remember correctly, and lived on Orgreave Rd in Catcliffe at the time. His name is Ray Platts, probably better known by more than a few as Ray Vern, singer with a band called the Chequers, who were quite popular locally in the mid 60's. Don't really know if he carried on working at the colliery or if he went full time with the band. Would like to hear from him or anyone who knew him then or now.....TB

my dad worked at treeton from the age of 14 came out to serve in raf during the war ,he was a deputy name of arnold megson .he was a friend of your dad remember meeting him when i was small. my dad died in 1974 age 57 at the pit

My dad Walter Jennings (part time cockle seller) worked at Treeton from about 1970 up until the miners strike. Sadly he died in 2004 aged 66

 

He did have fond memories of working with his mates down the pit and he used to tell us stories about what they used to get up to.
