JACK HEWITT   10 #25 Posted October 19, 2010 Hi Jack (no pun intended), no can't remember the bird's name, I thought that I had done well remembering Gloria's. I didn't live in the area but found that I got on well with the folk that did. Do you remember the town centre window cleaner, Harry Dukes? He was a top class snooker player who played for money in the Bee Hive on West Street, he lived in Havelock Square and had the one son who he doted on, the lad died in tragic circumstances. Our lot went everywhere that your lot went, we must have crossed paths at sometime. I can claim some residency rights, my grandmother was born in the caretakers flat at South Street chapel, now Sainsburys on The Moor. :thumbs up:  Back again Crookesey sorry dont know Harry Dukes i remember a couple of friends of mine that did live on the Square Trevor ( Pedro ) Humberstone and Brazilian Des Defraites (rip) big Des was a character well known around Sheffield i hung around with Des in the late 60s early 70s when we went in the Domino pub on the Broomhall flats together also i worked the doors with him for a while at the Kay Gee Bee night club but that would be in the late 70s under the old Abbeydale cinema do you remember the old chippy on South st behind the Travs pub top chippy that one. USUK   10 #26 Posted October 19, 2010 I remember Shirley, and Doreen, from the Traveller's Rest. They were transvestites when most people had no idea what a trannie was! They were lovely, so funny, and always had a witty putdown for anyone who went too far. Shirley was platinum blond and Doreen wore spex, iirc. The Travellers was the sort of pub where if your parents knew you were in there, they'd have had a heart attack. It was about 1 step up from the Barleycorn!  What about the Royal Oak at the bottom of Cemetary Road? That was a popular stopping off point on the Town pub crawl in the 60s/70s.  I remember the Barmaid from The Royal Oak in the mid 60's realy well . I think her parents had the Prince of Wales on Division Street.
 Share this content via...

My mates mother in law lived at the bottom of The Moor, she was a real character. She ended up in the Lansdown tower block nearest to Cemetery Road, his wife is a very smart lass called Jan (can't remember her maiden name).  I posted a thread a while ago named 'Sheffield Landlords and Landladies past', you ought to dig it out on search, you could add loads of interesting content to it. Treatment   10 #28 Posted October 20, 2010 If it was quite a new 'plasticky' pub (then), although not actually on The Moor, it sounds like The Whetstone.
 Share this content via...

Deborahw   10 #30 Posted August 31, 2012 Had some great times in the Travellers Rest. Ron Delta was often in there (I think he had a residency), sometimes with Freddie Benson (great organist), Bill Hogan (fantastic pianist) and many other club musicians / turns. Verina (think her real name was Vera) was the resident organist and she was well worth listening to. Also heard the Bill Hogan trio in there with Barry, Barbara Terry & Byron. You just can't have a night like that anywhere these days. There was never a dull moment although there never seemed to be any more trouble than the average town pub (certainly nothing on today's scale) and I would give anything to have a pub like that to visit now.  I am 55 now and at the time of my birth my grandparents ran this pub,Harold and Marion Heath,I lived there till I was three years ..I remember it well.My mums name is Rita she is alive and kicking ..no change there. I'm sure it must have been the Whetstone, a purpose built Tetley's managed house .... I worked there for 5 yr from when it first opened for Eileen and Tom Walsh who came from the Steel Inn on Harborough Avenue.
