Grass snake at rother valley 2/8/10

Recommended Posts

Was walking round Rother Valley Park today with the kids, on the driveway path near the wire ski place is, (near camping area) and straight from one side to other side of roadway path, came slithering grass snake. Has anyone else seen any? It is my first sighting in the UK ever.

uuurrrgggghhh.

Lucky you! Snakes of any kind are rarely seen in the UK, they are very elusive. Unless you come to my house where there's 8 of 'em. (Not grass snakes tho) Gorgeous creatures:D

Used to be fairly common when I was a kid living near Doncaster - I think they prefer lighter sandier soil - not likely to be found on Sheffield clay.

Yep, I saw one in Rother Valley CP about 3 years ago in the grass by the river that runs through it.

The other place I've seen them in Sheffield is Wharncliffe Crags

I've seen grass snakes in the city centre, not gonna say exactly where though.

I've also seen adders within the city boundary.

We see grass snakes regularly up at Linacre Reservoirs in Chesterfield, if we walk the dogs early on a sunny day you can see them basking on the hedge tops.
