Should Castle Market be a listed building?

There is nothing special about the castle market building.

 

 

Sure it might hold memories for people and might have been there a while.

 

BUT

 

Its ugly, it smells, its dirty, its ugly, lets knock it down and build some more offices!

 

Just what every city needs. More empty offices. Because with the new law... you have to pay business rates for property even if nobody is using it.

 

So 1000 empty offices means 1000 sets of business rates landlords have to pay.

 

CHING CHING!!!!!!!!!!

It should go. We need a market but that building is pretty poor use of the space, with a lot of empty 'dead' spots. Plus it sits on the top of the castle ruins, which should be open to view.

Is this a joke or what, Sheffield has lost the money for the sevenstone scheme, now there wanting to keep one of Sheffields biggest eyesores?
Who do you think 'they' are, though? English Heritage don't seem willing to reveal the identity of the applicant. I could see a certain appeal in the innovative style of Park Hill but can't see the merit of the Markets building at all. :huh:

 

It's obviously not SCC as all the plans for that area are predicated on demolition of the building. Curiouser and curiouser. :suspect:

We'd better get protesting sharpish, then. Although protesting to English Heritage didn't stop them listing either Park Hill or the old B&C Building, did it? They're a law unto themselves! :mad:

Even the head of Hallamshire Heritage (or whatever it is called) is quoted in the Star as being perplexed by this move!

 

Is it the same idiots who got the Co-op building listed?

The old meat and fish area of the market is quite a pleasant older building, and I'd be quite happy to see that retained, if a use could be found for it, the castle remains could still be opened up, and the unattractive and unsuccessful newer parts of Castle Market were demolished.

 

Buildings such as Castle House - the old Co-op - do have some architectural merit and are fairly flexible, so there are advantages in reusing them, rather than demolishing and rebuilding something for the sake of it.

 

But the arguments for demolishing Castle Market are pretty clear - it's dingy, parts are underused, it would be difficult to adapt for another purpose, it covers the remains of the castle, and there are decent plans for a new market ready to go.

Castle market should be a demolished building. Its one of the last standing bastions of age gone by. As is the Old Fiesta building, O2 Academy and underpass area that leads under arundal gate area. When through the underpass it feels like an episode of Life on Mars. Its just like being back in the 70s. Horrible, get rid please

The Council has plans to open up the castle remains once the markets have gone, and I would have thought English Heritage would be more in sympathy with that idea than keeping the present eyesore.
